2007 Outlook
Hasselbeck had a down year in 2006 when he only threw for 2442 yards and 18 touchdowns but he missed weeks eight through 11 when he sprained his right MCL. Adjust that for a 16 game season and Hasselbeck would have turned in 3250 passing yards and 24 touchdowns – almost exactly in line with his average over the three previous seasons (a little lower on yardage). Hasselbeck had averaged 24 touchdowns per season with about 3500 yards for those three years.
Hasselbeck also had a broken finger on his non-throwing hand last season and required off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder on his non-throwing arm. He has been ahead of schedule and was already throwing in minicamp and impressed everyone with his velocity only three months after the surgery. He is expected to be completely recovered in time for training camp.
The big difference this year will be the loss of Darrell Jackson who has been his primary target since Hasselbeck became the starting quarterback in 2001. Deion Branch is moving over to the flanker spot now vacant and D.J. Hackett will assume the split end role. Hasselbeck also lost tight end Jeremy Stevens who was replaced by the aging Marcus Pollard. But the Seahawks have not picked up any new wideouts and will look to get improvement from the group including Nate Burleson and Bobby Engram who is healthy again. Seattle has a soft passing schedule as it traditionally does but the players involved will be in new roles. That sheds a little more risk to this year and the decline of the dominating rushing game yields less consistency for Hasselbeck’s numbers since his need to throw can be great but it can also be well known by the defense. He makes a great back-up quarterback but due to his risk this year, he’s only a starter in a very deep league.
Recent Priority News
10/12/08
The Tacoma News Tribune reports Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren seemed somewhat pessimistic about QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee) returning in the near future. Holmgren said Hasselbeck will have to get more tests on his knee this week because it does not seem to be responding the way it should with treatment.
Huddle Up: More trouble for the Seahawk offense as Hasselbeck is now likely out and his receiving core is back. It is becoming apparent that this may not be Seattle's year so fantasy owners may want to steer clear of all Seahawk skill position players until Hasselbeck returns to action which sounds like could be a ways off.
10/10/08
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee) missed practice mainly for precautionary reasons Thursday, Oct. 9, and offensive coordinator Gil Haskell plans on having Hasselbeck play in Week 6.
Huddle Up: This conflicts with an earlier ESPN.com report that said Hasselbeck's status was "very, very shaky." This has all the makings of a Sunday morning surprise if you're one of the unfortunate souls forced to play Hasselbeck this week. Even if Green Bay's secondary is in bad shape, Seattle hasn't shown it has the kind of offense to take advantage of it.
10/10/08
In further developments - the Everett Herald reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee) did not practice Friday, Oct. 10, and he is not expected to play in Week 6.
Huddle Up: This is a huge blow for the Seahawks as they just got a healthy receiving core back on the field to help quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. With the Seahawk starter likely out of action #3 QB Charlie Frye may get the start as Seneca Wallace is very questionable due to a calf injury.
10/06/08
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck suffered a hyperextended right knee Sunday, Oct. 5, but was able to return to the game. "I dodged a bullet, I think, so I'm not overly concerned with that," Hasselbeck said after the game. He said he was in a lot of pain but the team's doctors said everything in his knee looked stable.
Huddle Up: Hasselbeck has struggled while Seahawk receivers dropped like the Dow around him, so you can bet he'll do everything in his power to remain on the field as Bobby Engram and Deion Branch work their way back from injuries.
10/05/08
Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee) suffered an apparent knee injury during the team's Week 5 game.
Huddle Up: It appears it wasn't bad enough to knock him out of the game, but even with Branch and Egram back it will take some time for him to be able to put up his usual type of numbers.
09/16/08
The Tacoma News Tribune reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck is still not comfortable with all the new receivers and doesn't know who is going to be where.
Huddle Up: Ya think? Hasselbeck doesn't look worth starting against anyone -- even the Rams this week. To say he's out of sync is a massive understatement.
