2007 Outlook

Tavaris Jackson was a surprise pick in the 2006 NFL draft when the Vikings used their 2.32 selection to get the Alabama State product who was considered by most to go a few rounds later (think Quincy Carter here). With the aged Brad Johnson as the starter, Jackson had only limited play last year and turned only one start – Week 16 against the Packers when he completed 10 of 20 passes for 50 yards and one interception. His best effort of the year was splitting time with Johnson in week 15 against the Jets when he completed 14 of 23 for 177 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He steps in as the starter this year having only thrown for 47 completions and 475 yards with two scores and four interceptions. That’s a 62.5 QB rating and a 58% completion rate. As surprising that Jackson was an early draft pick last year is the fact that he will be the starter in 2007. HC Brad Childress stands behind him and the Vikings did not bring on board anyone that would realistically compete with him for the starting job.

The Vikings passing game has a fairly light schedule which will help but the wideouts were all ineffective last year and the only upgrades from the offseason were signing Bobby Wade and Cortez Hankton. Doesn’t look like much of an upgrade and in minicamps the most notable tidbit about the passing game was that all the receivers were dropping passes. The Vikings have one of the better offensive lines, but considering Jackson as anything beyond a #3 fantasy quarterback for your team is wildly optimistic.

The Minnesota Vikings are starting to roll toward the playoffs and their QB Tarvaris Jackson is a big part of that success along with rookie RB Adrian Peterson. Jackson, who has struggled during the early part of the season, seems to be settling into the Vikings offense and is developing into the quarterback of the future they envisioned. "Everything's clicking as an offense," rookie WR Sidney Rice said. "Tarvaris is gaining confidence every week. Hopefully he'll continue to do that."
Huddle Up: Jackson and the Vikings have a favorable upcoming schedule for the fantasy playoffs as they will play against San Francisco, Chicago, Washington and Denver to end the season. Look for Minnesota to finish strong and be a strong factor in leading many teams to a fantasy league championship starting in Week 14. Due to the emergence of Jackson, rookie WR Sidney Rice could be a nice sleeper acquistion for your fantasy team down the stretch.

The Minnesota Vikings appear likely to start QB Tarvaris Jackson on Sunday when the Vikings battle the San Diego Chargers. Tarvaris suffered an injury to the index finger on his throwing hand and had this to say after practice on Wednesday. “I know it’s going to be sore tonight because of the banging around I did of it today, but I’ll be OK.”
Huddle Up: Jackson should start in Week 9 due to the injury to Kelly Holcomb who suffered a neck injury in last weeks game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He should not be considered a option for fantasy owners since he was not playing at a high level when he was in the lineup and not injured. Look for better options this week.

First ineffective play, now this. Jackson's broken finger on his throwing hand will likely open the door for Kelly Holcomb to start this weekend against Philadelphia.
Huddle Up: Unless you're absolutely desperate for a bye-week filler QB, Holcomb isn't an option even against a wounded Eagle secondary.

Minnesota starting QB Tarvaris Jackson is likely out for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs after sustaining a groin injury in Week 2. Jackson had missed practice on Wednesday with the injury and barring a major recovery in the next few days will be on the sidelines Sunday.
Huddle Up: If Jackson does not play then backup QB Kelly Holcomb would come in and direct this offense. Holcomb, who was acquired from Philadelphia in August, got most of the first team reps on Wednesday over Brooks Bollinger. "It's been a little while," Holcomb said. "It's not like riding a bicycle, but you've got to get in there and look at all the tape and see what they're doing to you."

The Minnesota Vikings came into the 2007 season with QB Tarvaris Jackson as their quarterback of the future. After Sunday's performance the future in Minnesota looks a little dimmer at the quarterback position. Jackson passed for 166 yards but completed only 17 of 33 passes and worse yet had 4 interceptions and 0 touchdowns on the day. "I didn't play very well. I threw four away," Jackson said. "The defense kept us in the game."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should not even look at Tarvaris Jackson for a start on their fantasy rosters at this point. There are far better options out there than taking a chance on the erratic play of Jackson.

12/22/06
Looking like the first-time starter he was, Minnesota QB Tarvaris Jackson managed only 50 yards passing against a porous Green Bay pass D. He was also sacked three times and threw an interception. When factoring in loss yardage due to sacks, the Vikings managed only 27 net passing yards.
Huddle Up: It's not advisable to play any Viking player, even at home against the Rams next week.
