2007 Outlook
Kitna’s first season with the Lions resulted in a mere 372 completions (#1 in the NFL) on 596 attempts (#2 in the NFL) for 4208 passing yards (#4 in the NFL). All this in his first season in the new offense while throwing every pass in every game for Detroit. He even added 156 yards and two rushing scores to add to his 21 passing touchdowns. Kitna threw 22 interceptions, but his ratio was only 27:1 for passes thrown – no difference than what any Martz offense produces. Bulger’s final two years in that system produced 32:1 and 34:1 with a far better offense around him. Kitna set a career high for passing yardage and turned in four 300 yard games in 2006.
2007 will include the ever-hyped Calvin Johnson to add to Roy Williams and Mike Furrey which can only improve the passing. Kevin Jones is still recovering from his foot injury last year but at least the Lions went out and picked up Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett as replacements as needed – bit of an upgrade from Arlen Harris and Aveion Cason. The only question revolving around Kitna was the drafting of Drew Stanton with the 2.11 pick as the 5th quarterback taken in April. Stanton was a local favorite of sorts coming from Michigan State but the complicated offense is far better off this year with Kitna rather than dumping the year’s fortunes with a rookie quarterback. The Lions are in a good spot to improve and starting a rookie QB makes no sense for this year. Barring an amazing training camp, Stanton won’t be a factor for 2007 in this pass-happy offense. Kitna gets head up what should be one of the best passing attacks in the league this year – just expect a few interceptions along the way.
Recent Priority News
08/27/08
ESPN.com reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna has been incredibly sharp during the preseason. He has hit 18 of 21 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. He has a quarterback rating of 150.5.
Huddle Up: No question that Kitna has the potential to be a strong leader for the Lions in directing their offense this season. Detroit started off great last year but then tailed off at the end of the season to fail to make the playoffs. With the weapons of Calvin Johnson, Roy Williams and new rookie RB Kevin Smith ready, look for the Lions to run the ball more to open up the passing game for Kitna. If they can be successful and consistent in their rushing attack then both Jon Kitna and his receiving corp should be in store for a nice season. Kitna can be acquired in the latter rounds of the draft and should make a nice No. 2 quarterback with upside to be a No. 1 this year.
08/19/08
The Detroit News reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna has compiled a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating over the first two preseason games. Kitna completed all three of his passes for 76 yards and one touchdown Sunday, Aug. 17.
Huddle Up: Despite limited action early on in the preseason this is certainly an encouraging sign for a team that is in need of an offensive identity this year. Kitna has the weapons and the potential to succeed in Detroit and must start the year off right by setting a rythmn of success as the Lions look to move some younger players in at the skill positions. Fantasy owners could find a nice surprise late in fantasy drafts if they take a chance on Kitna as a No. 2 quarterback since he has the upside to rise to a No. 1 option by the middle of the year.
08/15/08
Mlive.com reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna will be asked to run more in the team's offense under offensive coordinator Jim Colletto. 'He can run and he likes doing it. It's of his favorite things,' Colletto said. 'I told him 'I don't care what your age is, you're going to run. He said 'I'm all for it.''
Huddle Up: Uhh, you think that's such a good idea, coach? Regardless of the fact the Kitna's 36 years old, it's still a questionable idea to expose your quarterback to that much added risk. If you take Kitna, you'd better handcuff him with Dan Orlovsky, who's listed as No. 2 on the Lion depth chart.
07/22/08
The Detroit News reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna is entrenched as the team's starting quarterback entering 2008.
Huddle Up: No news flash here, but Kitna was consistently a productive fantasy quarterback last season, even though his team was horrible. There's no reason to believe he won't be this season, even if Mike Martz has moved on to San Francisco.
12/21/07
Detroit OC Mike Martz said that backup QB's J.T. O'Sullivan and Dan Orlovsky won't see increased playing time in the final two games of the regular season. He also stated that Kitna would remain the starter going into the 2008 season.
Huddle Up: Good news for those needing Kitna to close out their fantasy season.
12/17/07
Jon Kitna has struggled at times this season and looked good at others but Sunday the Lions quarterback turned in one of his worst performances of the year as the Lions were demolished by the Chargers 51-14. Kitna completed 26 of 45 passes for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns but also threw 5 INT's during the game. San Diego defensive back Shaun Phillips returned one of the interceptions for a touchdown in the second quarter of the contest.
Huddle Up: Kitna will face another strong pass defense in Week 16 when the Lions play the Kansas City Chiefs. If your fantasy team is involved in the fantasy championship of your league it would not be recommended that you start the struggling Kitna unless you just have no other options. The Lions are essentially out of the playoff picture and have nothing left to play for.
