2007 Outlook
This is Leftwich’s last stand – at least in Jacksonville. After four seasons filled with promise and little more than the eventual injury, Leftwich is in the final year of his contract and whatever happens in 2007 will have a major impact on both his career and bank account. Unfortunately, Leftwich played in 15 games as a rookie and for the next three seasons lost more time each year due to injury. 2007 proved to be his worse with a badly injured ankle in week seven that forced him out for the rest of the season and eventually required surgery to correct. Leftwich reported to minicamp recovered from the injury and 25 pounds lighter which should help him with his mobility unless he just gains it back via muscle exercise.
Not only is Leftwich in a contract year that could be "do or die", but he has to learn a new offense being installed by OC Dirk Koetter who comes over from Arizona State where he was both the head coach and the offensive coordinator. The new offense has brought a sense of excitement by the players who know they could never talk badly about a new scheme or it would be Oakland all over again. But Koetter had much success in college and should bring a simpler offense that would benefit Leftwich. The new scheme should prove to be more vertical in nature and less the dink-and-dunk stuff of recent years. The Jaguars have a tough schedule this year which won’t help and fantasy playoffs will bring match-ups against defenses of CAR, OAK and PIT. But a new scheme always seems to work well earlier in the year until enough game film exists to figure it out. Once that happens, it’s all on Leftwich to play well and stay healthy. And that has never happened so far.
08-31-07 Update: Leftwich was demoted today and may be on the verge of being cut. He's not likely to land as a starter anywhere else so his only fantasy value now is marginal in keeper leagues.
Recent Priority News
08/11/08
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the Steelers have signed free-agent QB Byron Leftwich. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Huddle Up: After losing Charlie Batch to a broken collarbone the Steelers needed some veteran insurance. Ben Roethlisberger has yet to play a full 16-game slate in his four-year NFL career.
08/09/08
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports free-agent QB Byron Leftwich (Falcons) is scheduled to workout Saturday, Aug. 9, for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Huddle Up: With the injury to backup Charlie Batch the Steelers will look at former Jaguar and Falcon Byron Leftwich and likely a few others in the next few days. Leftwich could be a nice fit in Pittsburgh as he is familiar with the team and some of their tendencies as he has played against them in the past with Jacksonville.
07/31/08
ESPN.com reports the Tennessee Titans are bringing in free-agent QB Byron Leftwich (Falcons) for a physical. The team is looking to see if he should be added to their 'ready list' of players in case of an emergency. The team has a number of receivers coming in for a workout Thursday, July 31, so they want Leftwich to throw to them rather than one of their own quarterbacks.
Huddle Up: Leftwich is attempting to work his way back into the NFL, this time with the Tennessee Titans. After playing last season with the Atlanta Falcons, the ex-Jaguar quarterback Leftwich could be a nice insurance policy for Vince Young in Tennessee this season. Despite his recent injury problems, Leftwich still has the potential to be a valuable backup quarterback in the NFL with the potential to carry a team if he is pressed into action in case of a serious injury. It is yet to be seen if he will land in Tennessee or somewhere else at this point.
11/14/07
Despite leading the Atlanta Falcons to back-to-back victories over the San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers, coach Bobby Petrino stated Wednesday that Byron Leftwich will return to the starters role for Atlanta when he is healthy. "That message has not been conveyed to me," Harrington said. "That wasn't my understanding coming into today. But I'm not going to create a fuss. I'm going to do my job for this team."
Huddle Up: The uncertainty at quarterback is not a good sign for the Falcons in light of the recent success behind QB Joey Harrington. Fantasy owners should stay away from both quarterbacks since it is obvious that either one could play at any time and there is not a clear cut No. 1 at the present time.
11/13/07
Leftwich could be cleared to play as early as this
weekend, creating the potential for a quarterback
controversy in Atlanta, even though Joey Harrington has
led the Falcons to two straight wins.
Huddle Up: Head coach Bobby Petrino was non-commital Monday
about who he would start at quarterback should
Leftwich be able to return. But whoever it is, Leftwich or
Harrington, neither is a viable fantasy starter. Probably
the only Falcon worth consideration is running back
Warrick Dunn, and that's only if fellow RB Jerious
Norwood remains sidelined with an ankle injury.
11/07/07
Atlanta QB Byron Leftwich has still not fully recovered from the ankle injury he sustained in his first start with the Falcons two weeks ago. The veteran QB is recovering from ankle surgery and attempted to throw on Monday according to reports. "He went out and threw on Monday and got real sore from doing that," coach Bobby Petrino said. "He took today off."
Huddle Up: Atlanta has had nothing but problems this season due to their unsettled quarterback position. Leftwich being hampered by his ankle injury will force the Falcons to continue to start QB Joey Harrington until further notice. Fantasy owners are advised to stay away from all Atlanta quarterbacks unless you have no other choices to start.
