2007 Outlook
They said it could not be done and Pennington proved them wrong. He really can play a full season without ending up on injured reserve. Pennington exceeded the lofty 13 game season mark when he finished out the 2006 season with 3352 yards and 17 touchdowns against 16 interceptions – pretty middle of the road after waiting for seven years for him to finish a season intact. This too despite the Jets having a revolving door in the backfield last year. Thomas Jones comes over from the Bears to offer some stability there and a decent rushing game will help but Pennington hasn’t shown yet that he is worthy of much more than being a fantasy back-up QB taken because you waited too long on the position.
Recent Priority News
07/16/08
The NewYorkJets.com reports New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said he will try to give QBs Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington close to the same amount of repetitions in practices. Game rotation will be decided at a later date. Mangini added, 'My approach is when I name a starter, that guy will be the starter. It's not so rigid that there's not a chance to evaluate things as we go, but my approach is that when I name a starter, he'll be the starter.'
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should watch the Jets quarterback battle unfold in training camp as it is likely to be a heated battle with both Pennington and Clemens having attributes that they can bring to the Jet offense. Whichever signal-caller grabs the starting spot in New York could be in a nice position to be a solid No. 2 quarterback with good upside. With Jerricho Cotchery, Lavernaues Coles, Thomas Jones and a revamped New York offensive line the Jets could be the team to give the Patriots a run for the title in the AFC East this season.
07/15/08
NewYorkJets.com reports New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said he will try and give QB Kellen Clemens and QB Chad Pennington the same amount of repetitions at quarterback during training camp. Mangini will name the starter when one of them claims the job.
Huddle Up: Neither one of these guys will exactly be a hot commodity come draft day, but this position battle will still be worth keeping an eye on should you be looking for a backup QB come the late rounds.
12/19/07
Chad Pennington is expected to be the starter for the Jets playing in Tennessee this week as Kellen Clemens is still suffering from a rib and shoulder injury.
Huddle Up: The move is inconsequential against a tough Titans secondary but Pennington had turned in more decent games than Clemens who was still learning the ropes of being an NFL starter. Unfortunately the team expects to be without Laveranues Coles this week so the passing game has limited expectations anyway.
10/29/07
The quarterback saga continues in New York with Chad Pennington being pulled with 3:32 left in the game and being replaced by reserve QB Kellen Clemens. Pennington completed only 13 of 20 passes for 106 yards before exiting to cheers from the remaining fans at the Meadowlands.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners have likely seen the changing of the guard in New York as Clemens has long been thought to be the better quarterback of the two on the Jets roster. Check back later in the week for updates but it appears that Kellen Clemens is in line to get his first start of the season in Week 9 against the Washington Redskins.
10/24/07
HC Eric Mangini named Chad Pennington as the starting quarterback this week despite the calls from fans to use Kellen Clemens.
Huddle Up: How bad is it when a starting quarterback can throw for 272 yards and three scores on Sunday and then need to be named the starter again? Pennington's interception last week killed the Jets chances against the Bengals though and Clemens has been impressive in his limited play. Pennington caught a break by facing the Bengals last week and the Bills this weekend but looming games against WAS, PIT and @DAL are unlikely to make him look any better. Clemens time is coming but will be delayed while the Jets run through their easier match-ups and yet still lose.
10/23/07
Rumblings out of New York indicate there's a good
chance Pennington will be benched and replaced by
Kellen Clemens. This despite the fact Pennington had
his best statistical game of the season on Sunday
against the Bengals.
Huddle Up: It's probably time for the 1-6 Jets to pull the plug on this
season and start to see if Clemens is indeed their
quarterback of the future, or if they need to look to the
draft. Pennington's days are clearly numbered with the
Jets, if he's on your squad start thinking about finding
another QB.
