2007 Outlook
Big Ben may have seemed to plod through a bad season in 2006, but the reality is that he set career marks for completions (280), passing yards (3515) and touchdown passes (18). Of course he also led the NFL in interceptions with 23 – double the amount of either of his first two seasons. That he played at all last year was remarkable given his face plant into a windshield before the season started. He also had an appendectomy when the season started and later had a concussion. It was not the best of years for the Roethlisberger and his insurance agents would agree.
This means after three years, he still has not played a full 16 game season though he only missed one game last year. This year enters a new era with Bill Cowher gone and Mike Tomlin takes over with Bruce Arians as offensive coordinator who was promoted up after being the WR coach for the last three years in Pittsburgh. This is not the first stint for Arians as the OC since he had that job for three years in Cleveland before coming to Pittsburgh. Arians obviously already has a tie to the passing game in Pittsburgh which is a positive for Roethlisberger. But in Cleveland, Arians used Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb all three years and no Arians quarterback had more than 3040 yards or 18 touchdowns with him as the OC. The Steelers should be more talented than the Browns squad, but so far Arians has yet to show he can be successful in the OC role. That at least indicates that Roethlisberger and the rest of the offense have a little more risk than in previous seasons.
With his penchant for at least getting nicked up and never having more than 3500 passing yards or18 touchdowns, Roethlisberger cannot be considered as more than a back-up fantasy quarterback. If he can have as good of luck this season as he had bad last year, then he’d be the #1 QB for 2006. Figure him just for a bye week filler for this year.
08-15-07 Update: Roethlisberger gets a small bump up after looking very impressive in brief playing time in the first preseason game. The new offense by OC Bruce Arians seems to be coming together better than anticipated but has the personnel unlike Arians had in previous NFL stints.
Recent Priority News
01/07/08
QB Ben Roethlisberger got off to a poor start by throwing three early interceptions against the Jacksonville Jaguars to help them establish an 18-point lead. However, the Steeler quarterback settled down and led a furious comeback late in the game to take the lead at 29-28 before eventually losing the game 31-29. Roethlisberger completed 29 of 42 passes for 337 yards and 2 touchdowns in the contest.
Huddle Up: "Big Ben" has been a solid fantasy quarterback all season and should be a top 10 quarterback selection entering the 2008 fantasy drafts. Look to acquire Roethlisberger in Dynasty and Keeper leagues as he could be just scratching the surface of his potential for many years to come.
12/29/07
Ben Roethlisberger is listed as questionable to play against the Ravens this week and will likely miss the game. He has not practiced with the first team and has been limited because of a sprained ankle. Charlie Batch is expected to be the starter this week.
Huddle Up: Good idea to rest Big Ben for the playoffs against a Ravens team that hasn’t won a game for the last nine weeks. Batch has been a solid back-up in the past and shouldn’t affect the passing numbers much though players like Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes may not play the entire game anyway.
12/28/07
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Roethlisberger missed his second straight practice on Thursday and will likely sit out the Steelers' regular season finale against Baltimore this weekend. He's bothered by a sprained ankle, and while the injury is not considered serious, Pittsburgh doesn't want to risk aggravating it in a game that can't improve their playoff positioning.
Huddle Up: Huge blow for Big Ben owners, and yet another example of the pitfalls of having a league championship in Week 17 of the season. Hopefully you've got a solid backup or you can still grab a good free agent.
12/25/07
Steeler head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the issue of whether or not he'd be resting players this week against the Ravens. The answer he provided may not bode well for Roethlisberger owners.
"The reality is, we are in the tournament, bidding for the Lombardi [Trophy] like others, and, if we have some injury issues and people are dealing with injuries, then, yes, we will make sure they get healthy," Tomlin said. "If that means resting them then we will definitely consider that."
Huddle Up: Since Roethlisberger is nursing a sore ankle, it would probably be safe to assume he's one of the players to which Tomlin is referring. If you have a solid backup option at quarterback this week, you should seriously consider using it.
12/21/07
Ben Roethlisberger was seen limping on a sprained ankle following his stellar performance Thursday night in St. Louis. Early word is that the injury is not serious and will not prevent him from closing out the season next week at Baltimore.
Huddle Up: Whew! Looks like Big Ben and his fantasy owners have a green light for week 17. Another nagging injury isn't a good thing for the beat up Roethlisberger, but with the extra time off to rehab between games, he should be just fine.
12/15/07
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, returned to the field on Friday and took the first team reps for their game against Jacksonville on Sunday. Roethlisberger has been nursing a sore throwing shoulder that he injured in Pittsburgh's last game against the New England Patriots.
Huddle Up: Despite the injury news on Roethlisberger this week, he is expected to start and should be a decent starting option against a banged up Jacksonville defense. There is a concern that the weather could be bad in Pittsburgh this weekend so fantasy owners need to take that in consideration before starting the Pittsburgh signal caller against the Jaguars.
