2007 Outlook

After a rather inglorious end to last season, Romo will be the week one starter for the first time in his five years in the NFL. On the plus side, he is dating Carrie Underwood. On the down side, the last time anyone saw him play was when he bobbled a simple field goal snap and Dallas lost their only game in the playoffs. That last play bobble shouldn’t obscure what Romo did accomplish last year.

Romo was the starter in Dallas for only the final 11 weeks and yet posted 2903 passing yards and 19 touchdowns. Extrapolate that over a 16 game season and it equates to 4222 yards (which would have ranked 4th best in the NFL) and 27 touchdowns (3rd best in the NFL). In the span of those 11 games, he had three 300 yard games and six games with at least two scores. His three principle receivers are back again this year and while Owens and Glenn are aging, they combined for 2227 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2007 with the help of Romo. The Cowboys will have a new head coach in Wade Phillips but his interest will remain more on the defensive side. A new offensive coordinator in Jason Garrett is a wildcard of sorts, but the team added no new offensive skill players and will return the exact same cast from 2006. It’s a risk to assume Romo will be just as effective in 2007 since the offense will undergo scheme change of unknown proportions, but he has even more upside for fantasy drafters since his totals from last year were only 11 games and many will last remember “the bobble" instead of just what he accomplished in his first season as a Cowboys starter. Nice upside here and should be a bit undervalued in many drafts.

Recent Priority News

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is focusing on his posture in the pocket, standing taller and settling his feet before throwing passes during the team's offseason workouts. He has also worked on throwing passes from different angles with different motions. "I always felt that if I wasn't working on something or I wasn't trying to enhance your game and take it the next step, why play the game?" Romo said. "It's just not as much as fun if you're not trying to improve upon where you were."
Huddle Up: Romo is clearly working hard in the offseason to not only improve his game but help the Cowboys achieve success by leading them toward a World Championship. Fantasy owners should consider Romo one of the first quarterbacks taken in the draft as he is poised for big things in "Big D" this year. He has all the weapons around him to achieve elite quarterback numbers in the Dallas offense.

Tony Romo participated in a walk-through on Tuesday but did not put any zip on the ball since he still has soreness in his thumb. HC Wade Phillips reported that the swelling in Romo's hand has subsided and that he expects him to play this week in Carolina.
Huddle Up: Romo joined Brady last week in breaking the hearts of many fantasy owners but should be a good start this week with the Cowboys now in a position of needing to win to maintain the #1 seed in the NFC.

Romo injured the pinkie finger on his throwing hand against the Jets Thursday, but the injury doesn't appear serious as he was able to finish the game. "Eh, just banged up my little pinkie finger," Romo said. When asked if the injury was a big deal, he said: "Nah, it's all right. It's good." HC Wade Phillips said the injury was "no problem."
Huddle Up: Romo was injured in the first half and had trouble squeezing the ball the rest of the game. It's one reason he passed for only 195 yards, his lowest passing total since the second week of the season. But the injury shouldn't prevent him from practicing in preparation for the big game next Thursday against Green Bay.

10/29/07
According to reports the Dallas Cowboys and starting QB Tony Romo have agreed on a 6-year extension worth $67.5 million with $30 million in guaranteed money. The Cowboy quarterback was scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season since he was in the final year of his current contract. "A lot of times, you don't have a choice, so you've got to make a decision right there. But we have the luxury of time," Jones said. "It fits him, too. It lets him have a better feel for where he's going to be."
Huddle Up: Dallas has sewn up the services of Romo for the forseeable future as the Dallas quarterback. He has proven himself over and over again and now the Dallas ownership recognizes the value of their star quarterback. Look for Romo to only get better and put the Cowboys back on the road to the Super Bowl as early as this season.

09/10/07
Dallas QB Tony Romo was in top form Sunday night as the Cowboys defeated the Giants 45-35 in a high-scoring shootout. Romo completed 15 of 24 passes for 345 yards while having 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. "It was good to see we were able to put up so many points and keep attacking," Romo said.
Huddle Up: If Sunday night is any indication then QB Tony Romo will be a must have in all fantasy leagues initially as a low end No. 1 or No. 2 quarterback with tremendous upside as an every week starter.

08/10/07
Cowboy QB Tony Romo looked good in his first preseason action, going 10- for-11 for 93 yards.
Huddle Up: The Cowboys chewed up nearly 10 minutes on their opening drive. Romo couldn't get Dallas in the end zone, but he was still efficient. Considering the weapons surrounding him this season, there's no way Romo should slip past the eighth or ninth round in fantasy drafts, but he's doing just that in many mock drafts. He's slipped as far as the 11th round in The Huddle's 10-team mock. If you don't have a No. 2 QB, and Romo is there in Round 10 or 11, jump on him as fast as you can. He's the epitome of a sleeper.
