2007 Outlook

The Texans finally tired of waiting for David Carr to come around and sent him packing to the Panthers while acquiring Schaub for his first chance as a starting quarterback. Schaub languished behind Vick for three seasons, only starting three games in that time. His real claim to fame came in 2005 when he played against the Patriots and threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He’s been a hot property for two years but the Falcons retained him in 2005. New HC Bobby Petrino wanted to stick with Michael Vick and Schaub was allowed to leave.

In ever so brief action, Schaub has been impressive and even made it seem like the Falcons had wide receivers. He signals the change in the Texans under HC Gary Kubiak who tried to use inherited pieces in 2006 and now is turning the soil and starting over. Schaub is paired with the talented Andre Johnson but the rest of the wideout crew is hardly distinguished – the #2 spot may not be decided until the end of training camp. The Texans also have a tough passing schedule and Schaub will need the Texans to improve their pass protection from past years as one of the worst. 2006 saw them rise to 24th for sacks allowed in the NFL (this was an accomplishment) but many of those sacks also stemmed from Carr holding onto the ball too long. Then again – Schaub won’t have any real difference in the receivers that Carr had last year. His biggest advantage here – he has almost nowhere to go but up after the Texans only threw for 14 touchdowns last year.

Recent Priority News

10/07/08
Matt Schaub looks to be fully recovered from the virus that kept him out Week 5, and is expected to start this week against Miami.
Huddle Up: Schaub is a good backup QB to have on your roster, and a good bye week starter. But there's nothing about his matchup with Miami that's overly compelling.

10/05/08
The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub (illness) spent the night Saturday, Oct. 4, in the hospital with a viral infection. He dressed for the game Sunday but did not start. Backup Sage Rosenfels started for the Texans.
Huddle Up: Hopefully our members checked our Sunday morning Gameday Inactive report and caught this news before kickoff. This should be a one week situation, so no need to scramble. Especially given how replacement Rosenfels finished the game.

08/08/08
The Sports Network reports Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub will see limited time in the team's preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 9, against the Denver Broncos.
Huddle Up: Schaub will fly under the radar of a lot of fantasy owners come draft time. The health of stud receiver Andre Johnson is still somewhat of a question mark, but if Schaub is there in the fifth or sixth round, give him some serious consideration.

07/19/08
ESPN.com reports Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub has high expectations for the 2008 season, particularly after head coach Gary Kubiak named him the team's starting quarterback early in the offseason. 'Obviously, it was a great boost to my confidence just to have (Kubiak) come out and say that early on. So I could, as I did last year, kind of take the reins of this team and move forward and take that next step to get to that 10, 11, 12-win season, get to the playoffs, just raise the standard around here.'
Huddle Up: With Schaub being officially named the starter for the Texans prior to the start of training camp, the sky will be the limit for a Houston offense the was clicking on all cylinders early last season. Until Andre Johnson went down with a knee injury, Houston was moving the ball consistently and posting nice numbers for fantasy teams. Expect more of the same this year as long as both Schaub and Johnson remain on the field.

There's at least a small chance that Schaub will see some playing time the last two weeks of the season, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I think there's a good chance," HC Gary Kubiak told the paper. "I'm hoping that, if anything, this week he's ready to be Sage's (Rosenfels) backup going into the game.
Huddle Up: Doctors have told Schaub he can't damage the shoulder any more than it already is, and he is itching to play. If you've run Sage Rosenfels the last few weeks with success, keep a close eye on developments out of Houston before fully committing to a quarterback this week.

12/03/07
Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub suffered a dislocation of his left shoulder Sunday in the first quarter of the Texans 28-20 loss to Tennessee. "Matt has a dislocated shoulder, and that's all I know at this point," coach Kubiak said.
Huddle Up: The Texans brought in backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels to replace Schaub and he promptly completed 17 of 30 passes for 185 yards and 1 touchdown. He also threw for 1 interception in the game. Fantasy owners should expect Schaub to likely miss at least a game with the injury however don't expect anything big in Week 14 as the Texans battle the aggressive Tampa Bay Buccaneer defense.
