2007 Outlook

Smith took a much needed step up in 2006 when he threw for 2890 yards and 16 touchdowns against 16 interceptions – a bit better than the 1:11 ratio he had on TD’s versus interceptions as a rookie. Playing in the new offense installed by Norv Turner, he started out well with three straight games over 233 yards but then only had two more efforts eclipse the 200 yard mark again last year. He threw for a score in 12 of the 16 games but only three times did he have more than just that one touchdown. He ended with a 74.8 QB rating but that was almost twice that of his rookie season.

It could be argued (and should) that Smith accomplished that much with one of the weakest wideout crews in the league and even his much hyped tight end Vernon Davis missed about half the year injured. He did not have much to work with which should not be the case for 2007 since the team has dumped Antonio Bryant and picked up Darrell Jackson and Ashley Lelie, along with having a healthy Davis ready for his second season. The departure of Turner is troublesome, but the QB coach from 2006 – Jim Hostler – has been promoted to offensive coordinator to keep the continuity of the same system.

San Francisco has one of the softest passing schedules in the league for 2007 and there’s a vastly upgraded set of wideouts (not hard to do). Smith should take another step up this year but it still won’t merit him becoming a starter for a fantasy team. An intriguing back-up perhaps, but he still needs to show more in order to be taken in the first half of any draft.

Recent Priority News

06/19/08
The Mercury News reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith received praise from head coach Mike Nolan for his improved ability to handle the blitz. Nolan said Smith is getting rid of the ball more quickly and throwing with more confidence.
Huddle Up: The only place for Smith to go in '08 is up after a dismal performance in 2007. Smith amassed only 914 passing yards and 2 touchdowns against 4 interceptions on the year before exiting with a shoulder injury. Fantasy owners thinking of Smith as a sleeper this year could be right but it would be adviseable to draft him as a backup quarterback on your roster and watch to see what he does first.

Alex Smith met with Dr. James Andrews in regard to his injured shoulder on Tuesday. It was determined by Dr. Andrews that the shoulder injury may be worse than originally diagnosed and may end up requiring surgery to repair. "It's a third-degree separation, which is what our doctors diagnosed originally," said Aaron Salkin a 49ers spokesperson. "He needs a couple of more weeks of rehab, then we'll see where he's at."
Huddle Up: With Smith out for at least the next two weeks and maybe the season, look for QB Trent Dilfer to get the start for the dismal San Francisco offense. Fantasy owners should downgrade Frank Gore and the rest of the San Francisco offensive players due to the absense of Smith in the lineup.

11/16/07
Smith will sit out Sunday's game against St. Louis. The 49ers will go with Trent Dilfer in his place.
Huddle Up: If you can still grab them off the waiver wire, Dilfer may provide some value if you are desperate at quarterback. The Rams' defense will surely give up some points to the Niners Sunday.

10/25/07
49ers starting QB Alex Smith returned to the practice field this week and participated in unlimited practice with the San Francisco starting unit. Smith has been nursing a shoulder injury which was classified as a grade 3 separation but did not have to have surgery to repair the injury. "It's great to be back out there," he said. "As the day went on, I felt better and better."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners of Frank Gore and other San Francisco offensive players should receive a slight upgrade with the return of Alex Smith to the lineup. The San Francisco passing game has been non-existent without Smith and has allowed the opposition to put up 8 and 9 man fronts to stop Gore and the running game. If you own Smith in your league he would not be a recommended start against the Saints in Week 8 since this is his first week back on the field.

10/17/07
QB Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers appears likely to return to the field in Week 7 when the 49ers take on the New York Giants. Smith has been out for three weeks after sustaining a grade 3 shoulder separation and is listed as limited in practice for Wednesday.
Huddle Up: Smith's return to the lineup would be a great lift for the struggling San Francisco offense as he would be able to stretch the field utilizing his receivers better than reserve QB Trent Dilfer. If he in fact returns then fantasy owners can upgrade RB Frank Gore and the running attack because defenses would no longer be able to put eight or nine men consistently in the box to stop the run.

10/12/07
Smith, along with TE Vernon Davis, are expected to return to action Oct. 21 against the Giants. Smith has a separated shoulder while Davis hurt his leg against Pittsburgh.
Huddle Up: The return of Smith and Davis will obviously help the passing game, but should also help open up more holes for Frank Gore in the running game.
