2007 Outlook

This will be one of the more interesting players to watch this year. Vick is learning his fourth new offense since joining the league in 2001. Gone is the west coast scheme and now HC Bobby Petrino brings in what should be a power rushing game that in college accounted for obscene scores. Petrino always had success rushing the ball and typically ran 55% of the time – roughly the same as the Falcons last year. But instead of Brian Brohm with Louisville completing 65% of his passes with a 3:1 ratio of TD to interceptions, Vick has never been much better than 55% or 1:1. Over half the Louisville games featured 300+ passing yards last year. Vick never had any. This will be interesting to be sure.

Petrino has set immediately to creating a bigger offensive line and setting up a better power running scheme which could benefit Vick in both pass protection and holding the defense when Vick takes off. While Vick will always be a unique case, the new offense should be better suited for him if only because the old west coast scheme was such a bad fit. Prior to Jim Mora, Vick had his best season with Dan Reeves when he threw for 2936 yards and 16 touchdowns against only 8 interceptions. Problem too is that Vick gets hurt often. Prior to the west coast offense, Vick only started 19 games in two years as the starter and has missed no more than one game for the last three years. Petrino has said that he will not “coddle" Vick who must either rise to the challenge or be replaced. That introduces some risk for Vick from both injury and Joey Harrington on the sideline. Vick is who he is – a superb runner who for six NFL seasons has proven to be a below-average passer. .

Vick comes off a record setting season with 1039 rushing yards but he only scored twice and under Mora, he only averaged about four per season. Way back in 2002 before Mora showed up, Vick had a career high eight rushing scores. The new Falcons won’t stop Vick from running, but he’ll be expected to step up in the passing game – something he has never really done.

Vick's legal situation with dog fighting remains to be resolved but will have an obvious bearing on his season if he is found guilty in any way. Drafting Vick this year could truly be boom or bust and the risk is too high for the prudent owner to take him. Vick's learning a new offense anyway and his fit in it, like all the others, remains questionable at best.

07-27-20 Update: Dropping Vick even further and realistically, the only reason to take Vick in a draft this year is if you play in a keeper league and you have a final roster spot open just in case. If you must own Vick - pay the minimum possible because this could just give bad mojo to the rest of your roster.

07-18-07 Update: Vick was indicted by federal authorities in the dog fighting case and now should not be touched because of his risk. He may still play this year but he could end up suspended as well. Until more is known, there's far too much risk involved and no upside here.

Recent Priority News

Michael Vick was in court on Monday and was sentenced to 23 months in a federal prison for his role in the dogfighting operation located at his Surrey County property. Vick could have received a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison when the ruling was announced by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. "This is a difficult day for Michael's family and for a lot of us, including many of our players and fans who have been emotionally invested in Michael over the years," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said. "We sincerely hope that Michael will use this time to continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard."
Huddle Up: The best possible scenario for Michael Vick at this point would be to get a reduction of 3 months off his sentence for good behavior which would have him released in July of 2009. Otherwise he would be released in October of 2009 and miss the next two NFL seasons at a minimum. At this stage their is no guarantee that Michael Vick will even be reinstated by the NFL even when he is released. Fantasy owners should drop Vick in all league formats including keeper leagues if you have not already done so.

Troubled Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has pleaded guilty today on Federal charges of dogfighting. The NFL has suspended Michael Vick indefinately and without pay stemming from the guilty plea. It is estimated that Vick could receive prison time for up to five years and lose as much as $100 million in money due to loss of revenues resulting from this plea. Sentencing will be held on Dec. 10th for Michael Vick. "First, I want to apologize, you know, for all the things that -- that I've done and that I have allowed to happen. I want to personally apologize to commissioner Goodell, Arthur Blank, coach Bobby Petrino, my Atlanta Falcons teammates, you know, for our -- for our previous discussions that we had. And I was not honest and forthright in our discussions, and, you know, I was ashamed and totally disappointed in myself to say the least," Vick said.
Huddle Up: The Falcons organization will have to move forward without the face of their team.. Michael Vick. This is a tragedy for Michael Vick and all involved but Vick appears sincere in his public statements today that he has taken responsibility for his actions and this should go a long way to helping him work his way back into society and eventually the NFL.

The saga of Michael Vick continues to worsen and unfold each day. Due to the guilty plea that Michael Vick has entered the NFL has issued an indefinite suspension for the Atlanta quarterback. "You are now justifiably facing consequences for the decisions you made and the conduct in which you engaged. Your career, freedom and public standing are now in the most serious jeopardy," commissioner Goodell wrote. "I hope that you will be able to learn from this difficult experience and emerge from it better prepared to act responsibly and to make the kinds of choices that are expected of a conscientious and law abiding citizen."
Huddle Up: Vick will be facing a difficult road back to the NFL. Commissioner Goodell has repeatedly shown that he will handle situations according to their degree of severity and this situation appears to be a worse case scenario. Vick will be suspended indefinately without pay and will likely not be reinstated for the foreseeable future. Fantasy owners should not consider Vick in any fantasy leagues, not even keeper leagues.

08/20/07
Atlanta QB Michael Vick has agreed to plead guilty to federal dogfighting charges which could be punishable for up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charges will likely be far less than that due to the plea agreement with the government but could leave the quarterback's NFL career in flux. Vick will report to court next Monday August 27th at 10:30AM where he will have his plea hearing on the charges. "We are aware of Michael Vick's decision to enter a guilty plea to the federal charges against him and accept responsibility for his conduct. We totally condemn the conduct outlined in the charges, which is inconsistent with what Michael Vick previously told both our office and the Falcons," the league said in a statement. "We will conclude our own review under the league's personal conduct policy as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have asked the Falcons to continue to refrain from taking action pending a decision by the commissioner."
Huddle Up: This is a tragic day for both Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcon organization who could be without the services of their star quarterback for some time. Vick should not be considered for any fantasy leagues for the 2007 season and may no longer even be worth holding on to in keeper leagues also.

08/18/07
Troubled Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick seems to get in deeper trouble with each passing day due to the federal investigation alleging Vick was involved in a dogfighting operation. On Friday, Vicks' cohorts Quanis Phillips and Purnell Peace pleaded guilty to federal charges that they were involved in the dogfighting and joined four other witnesses and Tony Taylor in making a case against Vick.
Huddle Up: It is likely that Michael Vick could enter a plea of guilty in the very near future. The NFL, among others watching this situation unfold could suspend Vick within the next few days depending on the outcome of negotiations with the government and his legal team.

08/16/07
Michael Vick is reported to have been offered a plea deal by the prosecution that would recommend he serve at least one year in prison on felony dog-fighting charges. He only has until 9 AM Friday to accept the deal of face further charges. "It is a very good chance he will plead guilty," a source told The Journal-Constitution. "He definitely wants to play football again. His love is for football. And he would love to play for the Falcons again. But first and foremost is to get back on the field."
Huddle Up: Vick has not made a decision yet but this could be as good as it gets after every other defendant has copped a plea and rolled on Vick. 2007 is not going to happen for Vick but if he accepted the deal, he could potentially be able to play football again and not risk a five year sentence or more. But even if he accepts, that would make him serve his sentence into the 2008 NFL season so he's no longer worth keeping for the future unless you plan on looking at him on your dynasty roster until 2009.
