2007 Outlook

Nothing like being the Offensive Rookie of the Year to put a stamp of legitimacy on Vince Young. After taking over in week four, Young extended the Titans winless streak to 0-5 before turning the franchise around and ending the season 8-3 which included a one point loss to Baltimore. When Young took over, the Titans had no wide receivers of any note and ended the season the same way. He won games by mixing wideouts and tight ends with plenty of his own rushing to make the difference. He only threw for 2199 yards and 12 touchdowns against 13 interceptions but he gained 552 rushing yards and scored an NFL high seven touchdowns via the run. That was almost double the #2 rushing scorer who was, amazingly enough, Peyton Manning. Michael Vick only had three.

Young’s rushing yards and scores made him a top ten quarterback in many leagues though he offered more inconsistency since his best passing yardage of the year was only 249 yards and nine of his thirteen starts ended with less than 200 passing yards. And yet he was only a rookie playing for a team that has a wideout crew as weak as any other team. What is troubling is that the Titans did not use free agency to acquire a veteran this year and allowed both Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade to leave. Once again, the Titans are entering the season with a slew of inexperienced wideouts in the hope that one or more of them step up and exceed reasonable expectations. Complicating this more was allowing Travis Henry to leave and relying only on LenDale White, the very inexperienced rookie Chris Henry and bringing back Chris Brown. That’s not an equation for improvement but Young already took the team on his back in 2006 and ended a more than respectable 8-8 on the season. The Titans have a very tough schedule this year which will challenge Young again but that could end up with him running for more yardage this season. The worst of all worlds here is that neither White nor Henry make defenses respect the rushing game and the receivers show their inexperience and make Young a marked man for the entire defense.

Young's value during 2006 was his rushing yardage and scores and while he'll no doubt need to run again this year, expect his touchdown total to decrease. The best comparison for this is how Michael Vick's first full season saw him score eight rushing touchdowns but it was not until three years later he got as high as six scores again. Last year Vick had 1039 rushing yards but only two scores. Defenses adjust to what the strength of the offense is and that will once again be Young taking off on a run. With lesser receivers than in 2006, more effort will be placed on keeping Young out of the endzone.

08-20-07 Update: After already being concerned that the TEN offense would struggle this year, two preseason games have done nothing to suggest that is not true. Young has to drop a couple of spots in the rankings because his offense looks worse than last year.

Recent Priority News

08/30/08
The Associated Press reports Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher would not comment on the severity of QB Vince Young's (hand) hand injury Friday, Aug. 29. Young was seen leaving the team's facility with his right hand taped. When asked if the team planned to X-ray or run other tests on Young's right hand, Fisher said only that the quarterback was doing well. "We'll have a full injury report for you (next) Friday," Fisher said. "He'll be designated as whether he practiced or did not practice. At this point, I would expect he would practice."
Huddle Up: Initially reported as a bruise, Young's injury doesn't appear to be serious. He finished the drive after the injury and coach Fisher was also quoted as saying, "He's fine. He really could have finished." What fantasy players should be more concerned with is Young's dismal play through the entire pre-season. He finished the pre-season with no touchdowns and a paltry 4.7 YPA. Unless you want to carry three quarterbacks and take a late round flyer on him, he should be avoided in drafts.

Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young was 4-for-13 against the Oakland Raiders Friday, Aug. 15. He threw for just 37 yards and left after five series of play.
Huddle Up: One of these days we will all finally admit that Young may never be a good NFL passer. He still possesses enough on-the-field talent to gain yards and score, so if he falls to you in the 12-15 round range in your draft he a value pick and still makes a decent backup QB for your fantasy squad.

06/28/08
ESPN.com reports Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young said he would invite some of the team's wide receivers to his home in Houston for a few extra days of work prior to the start of training camp in an effort to maintain chemistry.
Huddle Up: Sounds like a great idea and one that could play big dividends for not only the chemistry of Vince Young and the receivers but also the entire team. It appears that Young is maturing even more leading up to the 2008 season and is attempting to take a more active leadership role with the Titans. Fantasy owners should watch how things unfold with Tennessee in training camp and if the receivers and Young work well together consider the Tennessee signal-caller a prime sleeper candidate that could serve well as a No. 2 backup quarterback.

01/05/08
QB Vince Young of the Tennessee Titans took part in practice on Friday but is considered a game-time decision for the Titans playoff game against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. "I did say early he's a quick healer," coach Fisher said. "He's been that way. He can overcome some difficult things rather quickly, so we're very optimistic at this point."
Huddle Up: Expect Young to suit up and play against the Chargers since this is a playoff game and there are no tomorrow's at this point of the season. Young should have a nice game against a weak San Diego secondary as the Titans could take a surprise victory over the Chargers if Young is on top of his game. He has been known for having his best performances in the big games throughout his football career.

12/03/07
QB Vince Young showed Sunday why he is the future of the Tennessee Titans as he led his team to an impressive 28-20 victory over the up and coming Houston Texans. Young was 21 of 31 passing for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns against 1 interception for the game. Young also lost 1 fumble in the contest. "They're bringing a bunch of guys in the box," Young said. "They are basically telling us, 'Vince you can't make that throw. And the receivers can't make that catch.' We took it upon ourselves to prove them wrong. That's just nothing but motivation."
Huddle Up: You can see Vince Young growing and maturing each week as an NFL quarterback. Fantasy owners should temper their expectations this season but look for even better things next year especially if the Titans can land a big-time receiver for Young to throw the ball to. The Titans have a decent matchup in Week 14 against San Diego so consider Young a No. 2 quarterback for the game.

10/26/07
Vince Young will start this week after returning to practice and his quadricep injury has healed enough to allow him to practice without limitation.
Huddle Up: Playing at home against the Raiders should provide decent numbers from Young this week as long as his quadricep injury will not prevent him from continuing to rush the ball. The Titans have three consecutive home games coming up and a healthy Young should be able to keep the Titans in contention for an eventual wildcard bid.
