2007 Outlook
After leading the league with 1880 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2005, Alexander lost a couple of linemen and then suffered a nondisplaced fracture in the fourth metatarsal (cracked foot bone) and missed time from week four through ten until returning. He was less than effective in those first three games, gaining only 187 yards on 65 carries (2.9 YPC) and had another minimal game his first week back with only 37 yards on 17 carries. But then he ran 40 times for 200 yards against the Packers and never fell below 73 yards per effort the rest of the season. He ended with his worst season since becoming a starter in 2001.
Alexander’s foot is still an issue but he claims to feel no pain or experience any problems. He worked out with the team in minicamps despite the crack not being completely healed. Adding that into a still fluid situation on the offensive line drops Alexander’s upside this year but the Seahawks are happy with their left side of Pro Bowler Walter Jones and Rob Sims. The right side is where the training camp battles will be to determine the starters. Even ignoring his monster week 12 games, Alexander still averaged 94 yards per game for the last five weeks and scored four times. His 3.6 yards per carry was a huge drop from the 5.0 of 2005 though and Alexander may be even more needed with Darrell Jackson now with the 49ers and the passing game less stocked than before.
The loss of Steve Hutchinson is now old news and the Seahawks have been working to get the offensive line back up to form. Alexander’s foot still is not healed, but so far it does not appear to be a problem for him. More information should come out through training camp about his foot but Alexander is dropping in drafts thanks to his down year of 2006 and fears about his foot and offensive line. Hutchinson may be gone, but Alexander had 14 and 16 touchdowns in the two years before the guard became a Pro Bowl player. He still has little role in the passing game compared to other heavy use backs, but his penchant for double digit touchdowns is undeniable. He is one of the few backs out there with no questions about sharing the load or potentially losing his job to another player.
Recent Priority News
04/22/08
The Seahawks have released Shaun Alexander as they part ways with their franchise career-leading rusher and the only Seahawk to win a league MVP. Alexander underwent a physical this week as he is still recovering from off-season surgery to his wrist.
Huddle Up: This move was expected and merely clears the way for Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett to become the new face of the Seattle rushing attack. With Alexander out of the picture, Seattle will also signal how set Jones and Duckett are as the starters when they conclude their NFL draft this weekend where yet another running back may be taken.
11/30/07
Alexander will make his return from a knee injury this week against
Philadelphia.
Huddle Up: The Seahawks would probably like to ease Alexander back into action, but
he'll likely have to tote more of the load than the team would like because
backup Maurice Morris is nursing an ankle injury.
11/28/07
Seattle RB Shaun Alexander, who has missed the last three weeks due to an ankle injury, returned to practice on Wednesday and could return to action as early as this week against Philadelphia. "Everyone kept saying, Man, it looked like you're fresh," Alexander said. "This is the best I've felt probably since the second week of the season."
Huddle Up: Despite the good news fantasy owners should not expect a great deal out of Alexander this week even if he does play. The 2005 MVP has not been running with the same vigor as he once did so temper your expectations for Alexander for the remainder of the season. Maurice Morris will likely get the start for the Week 13 contest.
11/23/07
Shaun Alexander still has not practiced this week and while he has not officially been deemed out for the Rams game, HC Mike Holmgren has already said that Alexander will not play until he can practice a full week. Maurice Morris is expected to take the start this week.
Huddle Up: Morris is an attractive play in St. Louis on Sunday and could contribute as a receiver in addition to his rushing duties.
11/17/07
Alexander missed his third day of practice due to his lingering knee injury and is very unlikely to play on Sunday. It is not official, but Maurice Morris is expected to start against the Bears this week.
Huddle Up: The absence of Alexander is hardly a negative for the Seahawks at this point and Morris is a safe play this week. The Bears at home can be stingy but their rushing defense has not held up as well as in years past.
11/16/07
Mike Holmgren verified the inevitable today when he
said Alexander would be doubtful for Sunday's game
against the Bears. He said he wants to see Alexander
fully participate in practice for an entire week before he'll
be comfortable inserting Alexander into the lineup.
Huddle Up: Maurice Morris will once again start in Alexander's
place, and he should put up pretty good numbers
against Chicago's suspect run defense.
