2007 Outlook

Entering into his second season last year, Barber had already been impressive in relief of Julius Jones as a rookie and truly found his calling when Parcells made him into the goal line back. While Julius Jones continued to do his damage largely between the 20 yard lines, Barber ended 2006 with 14 rushing scores – 3rd best in the NFL behind only Tomlinson and Larry Johnson. Considering that Barber only had 135 carries, he was more like a touchdown machine when he came into the game. Barber gained a respectable 654 rushing yards and added 196 more on 23 catches during a year that Dallas had a significant decrease in passes to the running backs (thank you Terrell Owens).

Barber had a 4.8 yard rushing average as well to rank 9th best for backs over 100 carries while Jones only managed only 4.1. If either back were to outplay the other and gain the lion’s share of work, it would be Barber but there’s been no word to that effect and really no reason for it to happen. If Barber and Jones could be melded together, it would be as good as any back in the NFL. But barring any unforeseen medical advances in advanced cloning, this powerful duo will again share the load in 2007 and post good numbers overall while diminishing what each other could have done – particularly for Barber. Of the two players, Barber has the most upside since he could horn in on more carries away from Jones and with his outstanding scoring ability, Barber has little risk.

Recent Priority News

05/20/08
The Dallas Cowboys have signed RB Marion Barber to a new contract for 7-years and worth $45 million which includes $16 million in guaranteed money. The new deal was put in place shortly after the NFL owners unanimously voted to opt out of their current labor contract with the players association which could lead to a possible lockout in 2011.
Huddle Up: The long-term contract for Barber will give the Cowboys a strong runner to be the centerpiece of the running game for many years to come. Fantasy owners should move Barber up draft charts for the 2008 season but keep in mind that newly drafted rookie running back Felix Jones will steal some carries and could be utilized in a running back by committee approach in Dallas sooner rather than later.

01/14/08
Dallas RB Marion Barber turned in another solid performance for Dallas Sunday despite the Cowboys losing to the Giants 21-17. Barber carried the ball 27 times for 129 yards and 1 touchdown with his longest run from scrimmage being 36 yards.
Huddle Up: Barber has developed into a big part of the Dallas offense and should be considered by fantasy owners as a solid No. 2 running back to start the 2008 season. If fellow RB Julius Jones is traded in the offseason then Barber could turn into an elite running back for the Cowboys right away.

12/10/07
Dallas' Marion Barber was almost a one-man wrecking crew Sunday as he continually found his way into the endzone in the Cowboys 28-27 come from behind win against Detroit. Marion "the Barbarian" as he is called by some rushed the ball 7 times for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground while also getting 10 receptions for 61 yards and another score in the victory.
Huddle Up: Despite splitting carries with Julius Jones in the Dallas offense, Barber has been the stronger runner all season and has positioned himself as the feature runner on the team. Barber will continue to be an integral part of the Dallas attack but will face a tougher road against Philadelphia, Carolina and Washington to end the season. Barber should still be considered a solid No. 2 runner for fantasy teams down the stretch.

10/09/07
Barber had his second consecutive bad game from a statistical perspective, rushing for only 28 yards and adding only 45 yards receiving, and not finding the end zone.
Huddle Up: It's hard to draw any real conclusions from such a crazy game, but the fact is Barber's been a huge disappointment after an incredible start. Think hard about starting Barber against New England's stout front seven.

08/10/07
Marion Barber had twice the number of carries of his Cowboy backfield mate Julius Jones against the Colts on Thursday. Barber had 12 carries for 48 yards, while Jones had 6 for 22 yards.
Huddle Up: There's probably not a whole lot of significance to this development, but it's at least a bit interesting and worth watching in upcoming games.

09/21/06
Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells has recently indicated his desire to get backup RB Marion Barber eight or nine carries per game in relief of starter Julius Jones.
Huddle Up: As if Julius Jones owners needed more angst in their life, Parcells love affair with Marion Barber continues to grow.
