2007 Outlook
The Titans re-signed Brown in mid-June and the move immediately makes him the most likely primary back for the Titans - whatever that actually means this year. Brown has been as good as 1067 rushing yards and six scores back in 2004 but was almost entirely phased out in 2006 when Travis Henry took over.
With only the unproven rookie of Chris Henry and the portly disappointment of LenDale White to compete against, Brown should be a lock for playing time at least early in the season and could last all 16 games so long as Chris Henry doesn't show up well in training camp and later in season games. Brown opted to sign again with the Titans because of his opportunity to be a starter again, boost his value this year and then sign with another team as a 2008 unrestricted free agent. He has the motivation to perform well this year and apparently the opportunity. But Brown still remains an upright runner who too often gets dinged up and after four seasons in the NFL he still has yet to play for a full 16 game season.
Brown makes an interesting depth pick for a fantasy team but the Titans schedule is fairly brutal this year and nothing he has done in the past says he is good for more than a handful of decent games with a few others lost due to injury.
Recent Priority News
09/01/08
Herniated Disc - Texans' RB Chris Brown will miss the entire 2008 season after being placed on Injured Reserve because of a severely herniated disc in his back. Brown has been limited throughout training camp and the preseason because of pain and stiffness in his back and a recent MRI revealed that he was suffering from a herniated disc. According to reports the injury could require corrective surgery and there is concern that he may not be able to play football again. Brown is loaded with talent, but he's been once of least durable players in the league over the last couple of years and it appears that he may not be able to return to the NFL. Ahman Green remains the starter in Houston and rookie Steve Slaton could end up getting a lot of carries as well.
08/29/08
HoustonTexans.com reports Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak have been meeting with team doctors to discuss the health of RB Chris Brown (back). The team will decide what to do with Brown this weekend.
Huddle Up: Due to the success of running backs Steve Slaton and Chris Taylor for the Texans, Chris Brown could be looking at the door in Houston. The Texans acquired Brown in the offseason from Tennessee to become their starting running back but has failed to stay on the field just like in his stint with the Titans. If he does manage to make the Texans roster this year, Brown would likely be no better than third on the depth chart behind Steve Slaton and Ahman Green.
08/19/08
The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans RB Chris Brown will get the starting nod in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 22. RB Steve Slaton will come off the bench.
Huddle Up: Regardless of who's playing, the guy to watch here is Slaton. This is because so far he seems to be the only guy (until this weekend's signing of Marcell Shipp) who has any chance of staying healthy. Anyone expecting Ahman Green to be a factor this year is likely smoking something exotic, so the backup guys are going to be a factor. Problem is, most of them have injury issues as well. Enter Slaton. As for Brown starting...watch his performance, and cross your fingers that he makes it through one game healthy.
08/11/08
The Houston Chronicle reports Texans RB Chris Brown (back) will play in the team's next preseason game.
Huddle Up: The Texans' backfield is like a shell game, with the healthy back who will get the carries hidden under three shells: Brown, Ahman Green, and a third shell to be determined between Chris Taylor and Steve Slaton. Pick the right one and you'll have some success behind Alex Gibbs' improved line, but your chances are at best one-in-three. Hey, at least Brown has shaken off the back spasms that slowed him earlier in camp... for now.
07/28/08
ESPN.com reports Houston Texans RB Chris Brown (back) did not take part in practice Monday, July 28, due to a back injury. 'His back was bothering him when he came in this morning,' head coach Gary Kubiak said. 'He's a day behind already, he needs to get back out here.'
Huddle Up: The knack on Brown has always been his health, so here we go again. The facts in Houston can't help but point to someone other than Ahman Green (age) or Brown (health) being productive at carrying the rock for the Texans this season.
11/06/07
Brown, who has missed three games with an ankle
sprain, is expected to return this week against
Jacksonville.
Huddle Up: LenDale White has been the man in the Titans
backfield, so Brown will probably return as the No. 2
back. Chris Henry will be eligible to play as he appeals
his four-game suspension for violating the league's
substance abuse policy, but he may go ahead and
serve the suspension now that Brown appears to be
back.
