2007 Outlook
Now that Tiki Barber is retired, Dunn has a firm grip on being the player most devalued in drafts only to surprise. Every year as a Falcon no less. But the Falcons are installing a new power rushing offense complete with a big beefy front line and the smaller, older Dunn hardly looks like a great fit for the offense. Under the zone blocking scheme employed by Atlanta the last three years, Dunn has turned in the best three seasons of his career. He has never failed to run for at least 1100 yards and has enjoyed a nice bang at the end of his career. But – he is 32 years old and will be 33 at the end of the season. That’s undeniably a factor in what the plans are with the new coaching staff. .
Dunn won’t be benched in favor of Jerious Norwood, but his role is certain to decrease. While he has never been used as a receiver in Atlanta that could change a little with the new offense. Assuming that HC Petrino will aim as something similar to what he had at Louisville that should result in at least a small uptick from the 25 or so passes that Dunn would usually catch in a season. Dunn carries much risk this year since the new offense is not designed to use a back like him, but Petrino has already said he fully intends to use both Dunn and Norwood this season and the lack of any movement in the draft only proves that more. Expect Dunn to retain a role in every game, but a lesser workload from sharing with Norwood which has a chance of decreasing sharply by the end of the season when you would want him most. Dunn is due to be paid $3.25 million this year and $4 million in 2008 when he will be 33 years old. Chances are too high that he may not reach that final paycheck next year.
07-27-07 Update: Dunn injured his back this week and needed surgery. He will miss three to four weeks which makes him miss most if not all of training camp - the one that he really needed to attend as the new offense is installed. Dunn is still expected back for the start of the season but he could be watching Norwood take the primary spot earlier than anticipated.
Recent Priority News
03/11/08
Warrick Dunn has come full circle now that he signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returns to the team that made him a first round pick in the 1997 NFL draft and ensures the 33-year old running back ends his career where he started.
Huddle Up: The early word is that Dunn will primarily be in a pass recieving role and not supplant Ernest Graham as a runner. At his age, much more playing time than third downs would likely jeopardize his health.
09/06/07
The Atlanta Falcons announced today that RB Warrick Dunn will be the starter at tailback for the start of the season. "One thing is that Warrick has been there for a long time and the rust will come off quickly," coach Petrino said. "We expect to get him in there as the starter, give him the ball and let him go."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should keep in mind that Dunn has a history of injuries which will likely occur again at some point this season. Second year player Jerious Norwood is the future running back for this team and that future could come in the next few weeks. Norwood is explosive and has more upside as a feature workhorse back in this offense.
07/25/07
Warrick Dunn will miss the next three to four weeks after undergoing back surgery. Dunn suffered the injury during offseason workouts and the team had not revealed the situation because they've been a bit preoccupied with Michael Vick. "I felt some discomfort in my back and legs that just never subsided," Dunn said in a statement released by the team. "After consulting with the medical staff, it was recommended that we have the surgery."
Huddle Up: Jerious Norwood moves into the starting spot now and he was already expected to play a bigger role this year. Dunn turns 33 in January but has been healthy the last three seasons. This absence does not come at a good time since the Falcons are installing a new offense and already will be without Vick. But this is a golden opportunity for Norwood to gain all the reps with the first team and make an impression on his new head coach.
12/19/06
Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn reported no setbacks with his troubled calf after week fifteen's game and is expected to start this week against the Carolina Panthers.
Huddle Up: Dunn is a safe play this week against a struggling group of Panthers.
12/13/06
Warrick Dunn suffered a calf strain during the win over the Buccaneers on Sunday but the injury is not considered serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the season. HC Jim Mora would not disclose Dunn's expected status for the Saturday game against the Cowboys.
Huddle Up: Dunn has not been particularly effective for much of this season but with injury to Jerious Norwood could mean Dunn is needed to play more than usual. His status for the game should be clear by the end of the week based on his practice time.
12/11/06
RB Warrick Dunn was injured in Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dunn, who carried the ball 11 times for 45 yards on the day, left in the third quarter after sustaining a calf injury. He would not return to the game and will be evaluated further on Monday.
Huddle Up: Dunn has not been consistent this season and should only be considered a low-end No. 2 or No. 3 running back for fantasy teams during the playoffs even if he is healthy. If you have other options at running back for Week 15 you may want to consider them until we know the severity of this injury. The Falcons will face Dallas in Week 15.
