2007 Outlook
Conventional wisdom had Foster losing his job to DeAngelo Williams last year but that never happened. In fact, Foster enjoyed his career best season which unfortunately still only amounted to 897 rushing yards for just three touchdowns. Foster hasn’t changed in production level in the last couple of years and has never rushed for more than three touchdowns in a season. His role in the passing game has stalled around 33 receptions per year.
The offense is changing this year to a zone blocking scheme under new OC Jeff Davidson and once again, it appears that Williams would be a better fit and a better back than Foster. The best you can hope for with Foster is what happened the last few years – around 850 rushing yards and only a couple of touchdowns. That is the high side. The risk is that the second-year Williams excels in an offensive scheme similar to what he ran in college and Foster becomes just a relief player.
Recent Priority News
12/07/06
Carolina Panthers running back Deshaun Foster (elbow) practiced fully on Thursday, December 7th, and is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the New York Giants.
Huddle Up: Head coach John Fox stated earlier in the week that if Foster was active he would start Sunday against the Giants. Foster's likely start on Sunday is no doubt a blow to DeAngelo Williams owners who enjoyed the last few weeks of increasing production out of the rookie back.
12/06/06
Carolina starting RB DeShaun Foster (elbow) practiced on Wednesday and may play in the Panthers' home game against the Giants on Sunday.
Huddle Up: Foster also practiced all of last week, but he wasn't deemed healthy enough to play against the Eagles on Monday night. If Foster is good to go on Sunday, fantasy owners can expect to see an RBBC scenario unfold as Foster and RB DeAngelo Williams each get their share of touches against the Giants. Both players make questionable plays in fantasy leagues mid-sized and smaller.
11/23/06
Carolina Panthers running back DeShaun Foster (elbow) missed practice on Wednesday, Nov. 22, and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.
Huddle Up: If Foster is not able to make it, rookie DeAngelo Williams, fresh off a 114 yard rushing effort last week in relief of Foster, makes for a promising start in your fantasy lineup.
11/20/06
RB Deshaun Foster left the Panthers game against the Rams early with an elbow injury sustained following a 2-yard run. His status for the upcoming game against Washington will be evaluated further this week.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should probably have expected this one since it seems that Foster leaves about this time every year with an injury. Hopefully, this injury will not hurt as much since you should have put DeAngelo Williams on your team as an insurance policy for Foster. Nick Goings also saw some increased carries in the game after DeShaun left with his injury.
08/25/06
DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams combined to
average only 2.9 yards on 13 carries against Miami on
Thursday. However, Williams had a 15-yard run and
finished with 41 yards on nine carries.
Huddle Up: Oh yeah, and DeAngelo also added in a 98-yard kickoff
return TD. Grab this guy in the mid to late rounds. It's
only a matter of time before he'll be starting in Carolina.
03/11/06
The Panthers and De'Shaun Foster agreed to a three-year, $14.5 million contract on Friday, only moments before the start of the free agency period. Foster's three-year deal includes a $4.5 million signing bonus.
Huddle Up: With this move (and the earlier release of Stephen Davis) it's obvious that Carolina feels they have their feature running back for the immediate future.
