2007 Outlook
Travis Henry signed a five-year contract with Denver that included $12 million in guaranteed money. Does that sort of coin suggest that RBBC in Denver is over? It should. Henry comes off a 270 carry, 1211 yard season with the Titans where he gained 4.5 yards per carry on a team with no running game otherwise. That was the third time in Henry’s career than he exceeded 1200 rushing yards in a season. In the three years that he was the clear starter all year, he averaged 10 rushing scores as well. Henry has always ran well enough on the Bills and Titans but now ends up with the Broncos who feature the best offense yet and more importantly – the best offensive line he will have ever ran behind.
The Denver backfield has routinely turned out 1900 rushing yards or more from the running backs the last several years and that was using backs like Mike Anderson, Reuben Droughns, Tatum Bell, etc.. Henry has a far more accomplished resume than those players and now has been paid the big dollars by a team that has shown commitment to him. He turns 29 this year but has only played three full seasons as the primary ball carrier – he has plenty of tread left on the tires. In many drafts Henry will likely fall more than warranted by so many fantasy drafters burned in the past by Denver backs but the stars are aligned in this situation for Henry to have a good year. More importantly – the dollars are aligned as well. Henry also rotates out of the NFL’s substance abuse program in week three of this season as long as he remains clean, so he wouldn’t be exposed to a year suspension with his next violation.
Recent Priority News
07/14/08
Updating a previous report, ESPN.com reports free-agent RB Travis Henry (Broncos) confirmed he has tested positive for marijuana again and is subject to a one-year suspension by the league. He will begin serving the one-year suspension soon, according to a source close to Henry. There is a strong chance that Henry's career could be over after repeated issues with the law.
Huddle Up: Henry was in the news last season after battling these types of allegations that more than likely led to his release prior to the start of training camp in Denver. With a one-year suspension staring him in the face, the talented running back will have an uphill climb to get back into the league and land in a situation better than he had in Denver. Fantasy owners steer clear in all league formats.

MyFOXColorado.com reports free-agent RB Travis Henry (Broncos) has tested positive for marijuana, according to a highly-placed league source. 'He is coming up for a year suspension,' the source said. This is the second time Henry is facing a possible one-year suspension from the NFL.
Huddle Up: If this is true, it's doubtful Henry will be able to doge the bullet this time. Don't expect Henry to be on an NFL roster this season with that kind of potential suspension hanging over his head. How's he going to be able to support those 36 kids of his?
06/02/08
The Broncos have released Travis Henry after only one season into his five year deal. "Although Travis has the ability to be one of the top running backs in the NFL, we have to make decisions that are in the best interests of our organization and its goal of winning a Super Bowl," HC Mike Shanahan said. "We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team."
Huddle Up: Henry is already nursing a hamstring injury and had missed some off-season workouts. His departure leaves the Broncos with Selvin Young, Michael Pittman, Andre Hall and the rookie Ryan Torain all vying for playing time. With Young not big enough for every down duty, there could be an opening for both Pittman and Torain to join a committee backfield this year.
05/20/08
Denver RB Travis Henry injured his hamstring during 100-yard drills and has missed some practice time with the injury.
Huddle Up: Just another nagging injury for Henry who is trying to establish himself once again as the Broncos starting runner. If Henry can return to his form from the beginning of the 2007 season he could be a sleeper on an improving Denver offense. Fantasy owners should watch the Denver running back battle in the offseason but keep in mind that Shanahan is notorious for using multiple backs instead of one workhorse runner.
12/05/07
Christmas came early this year for RB Travis Henry of the Denver Broncos. In an announcement on Tuesday, the Broncos starting RB Henry was won his appeal of a one year suspension of the NFL's substance abuse policy and will be cleared to play for the remainder of the season. "Travis Henry will remain in the substance abuse program, must continue to adhere to all aspects of it, but will not be suspended following his appeal," the NFL announced. "I'm thrilled," said Harvey Steinberg who is Travis Henry's lawyer. "I always thought we should prevail. I knew that if we got a fair shake, based on the evidence, we'd win. Travis knows and he's absolutely thrilled and relieved and very happy."
Huddle Up: This is great news for the Broncos and Travis Henry owners from a fantasy perspective. Look for Henry to return to being the feature back in Denver with RB Selvin Young going back to a backup role for the remainder of the season. RB Andre Hall will also lose value and will only be a factor for fantasy teams if the other running backs are unable to play.
12/04/07
The Rocky Mountain News reports that Travis Henry,
according to teammate Cecil Sapp, will win his appeal
of a year-long suspension for violating the league's
substance abuse policy.
Huddle Up: This is a shaky report at best, but if it's true, Henry can
play the rest of the season free of the burden he's
carried for the last few weeks. It's hard to put a lot of
stock in what's basically hearsay, but maybe this "leak"
will spur an official announcement sooner than later.
