2007 Outlook
Weird things happen when a team shifts their offensive focus from pass happy to a balanced attack. Both the rushing and passing evidently improve. Jackson had a solid 2005 campaign with 254 carries for 1046 yards and eight touchdowns with an added 43 catches for 320 yards and two more scores. That was merely a precursor of what was to come since Jackson was allowed to be a full-time, heavy use back last year and responded with 346 carries for 1528 yards (5th best in the NFL), ran for 13 touchdowns (tied for 4th) and also caught 90 passes (#1 among RB’s) for 806 yards (also #1) and three more scores. By the time everything is rung up, Jackson had 2334 total yards (also #1) and scored 16 touchdowns (#3). And that was in the first season of the new Linehan-inspired offense.
Oh yes, and he only turns 24 this summer. Hard to believe 23 teams in 2004 had someone else in mind for their first round draft pick. The scary part here is that once the offense was coming together later in the 2006 season, Jackson got even better. In the final three weeks, he gained a total of 419 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns and had 126 receiving yards with two more scores. He was the only way to beat the Tomlinson guy last year and it all came at precisely the right time. St. Louis will have a slightly tougher rushing schedule this year but Jackson’s role in the passing game merely shifts how he hurts opponents. The Rams did draft Brian Leonard who may play fullback and be a back-up for Jackson, but he’s actually about the exact same size as Jackson so there’s no need to make him a complementary back.
There’s no reason to ever let Jackson slide past the third pick in any fantasy draft this summer and if the league gets reception points, it’ll be pretty hard to let him get past second.
Recent Priority News
11/07/07
Rams RB Stephen Jackson appears likely to start in Week 10 when the St. Louis Rams face the New Orleans Saints. Jackson, who has suffered a partially torn groin and is now limited with a back problem, will greatly aid a struggling Rams offense when he returns to the field.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners that drafted Jackson certainly didn't get what they paid for with a high first round pick. However, if Jackson can return to the field in Week 10 he has a favorable schedule for the end of the year and could be a force down the stretch as one of the most well-rested elite backs in the NFL.
10/30/07
Jackson has a bulging disk in his back, but although it
sounds serious, according to reports out of St. Louis
he'll be able to play in Week 10 against New Orleans.
Huddle Up: The bye week couldn't have come at a better time for
Jackson owners. He'll have a chance to rest his back
and, hopefully, come back strong to face the Saints.
Keep a close eye on this situation as Week 10
approaches.
10/29/07
Running back Steven Jackson left the Week 8 contest with the Cleveland Browns in the first quarter and did not return. Jackson left with what has been called back spasms and will be evaluated further later on in the week.
Huddle Up: Jackson just returned from a long layoff due to a torn groin and now he is out with back spasms. It appears that the first-round fantasy pick for alot of teams may have lingering injury issues for the remainder of the season. If Jackson returns to action and posts some good numbers you may look to see what you can get for him in trade since he could still demand a fair amount of value.
10/25/07
The St. Louis Rams are slowly getting the pieces to their offense back in place and this week could see the return of starting running back Steven Jackson. Jackson, who has been out of action due to a torn groin , practiced with the team this week and is slated to start in Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns. "The groin is something, it feels good one day and the next day you may have a little tweak to it," Jackson said. "As long as things are going good I want to stay out there."
Huddle Up: Jackson could return to the lineup with a vengence since he will be running against the weak Cleveland defense. Look for Jackson to have a nice game and for the Rams to open up the passing game more due to the fact that the Browns will have to respect the running game. Fantasy owners should look to start the elite back barring any setbacks to his groin injury this week.
10/23/07
Head coach Scott Linehan sounded optimistic that
Jackson would finally return against Cleveland after
missing four games with a torn groin muscle.
"I think there's a good chance," Linehan told the St.
Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday. "My feeling is that it's
not 100 percent, but close. ... It looked like he had the
burst he needs to have — and the confidence — based
on practicing last week."
Huddle Up: Fantastic news for Jackson owners. Don't expect 160
yards and three TDs, even against Cleveland, but
Jackson should still put up strong numbers.
10/19/07
There was hope earlier in the day that Jackson may be
able to play against Seattle, but HC Scott Linehan
quelled any doubt when he declared Jackson out for
Week 7.
Huddle Up: The beat goes on. Brian Leonard will once again play in
Jackson's place. Jackson is close to returning,
however, according to Linehan, and could be back in
Week 8.
