2007 Outlook

After watching Tiki Barber run wild for the last two years, Jacobs is finally given his shot at being the primary back for the Giants. So far he’s been mostly a short-yardage, goal line back that has scored 16 times over his two seasons and last year ran 96 times for 423 yards and nine scores with a YPC of 4.4. His role in the passing game is almost non-existent with only 11 career receptions. But Jacobs is a load to bring down at 6’4" and 260 pounds. He’s much less likely to turn in a long gainer with a high of only 21 yards as his longest run after 134 career carries though in fairness many were of the short variety. Jacobs ran a 4.4 at the combine in 2005 and is fast for a player his size.

The Giants acquired Reuben Droughns in a trade for Tim Carter and he will assume the #2 role since it fills a big need. There have been overtures that the Giants will opt for a rotation with both Jacobs and Droughns, but what that ratio will be remains to be hammered out this summer. While Jacobs is underrated because many consider only his size, Droughns is likewise overrated from being a Denver back and getting a 300 carry year with Cleveland. Expect the Giants to get everything they can out of Jacobs and use Droughns to fill in the rest.

Jacobs also enjoys one of the softest rushing schedules in the NFL this year which should help. The Giants signed Rueben Droughns in the offseason in a trade with the Browns and that could be an issue if Jacobs fails to get off to a strong start but so far he’s been a very strong runner who has surprising and the power of a bulldozer.

Recent Priority News

According to sources, RB Brandon Jacobs of the N.Y. Giants underwent a surgical procedure on his left wrist during the offseason. The surgery was necessary to clean out some debris in the wrist which was injured last season. Jacobs is expected to be ready for training camp when it opens in July.
Huddle Up: Brandon Jacobs, projected by many as a sleeper last year in fantasy leagues, will also be highly regarded in the backfield of the world champion Giants for 2008. Fantasy owners should look to draft Jacobs in the 3rd or 4th rounds as a solid No. 2 running back but expect the Giants to also utilize their other running backs in different situations this season.

The New York Giants are in preparation for the much anticipated season ending game against the undefeated Patriots and expect starting running back Brandon Jacobs to get the start. Jacobs, who has been out nursing a sprained ankle, participated in practice on Wednesday with the New York starters. "No one in here is screaming 'Let's rest,' I can tell you that," Jacobs said. "Guys want to play. It's the last regular-season game and it's [at] home. Guys won't want to sit down. "Coach Coughlin said we're going to play to win the game," Jacobs said. "Whatever we have to do to do that, that's what we're going to do. No matter what it is, we're going to do it."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should expect the Giants to play their starters at least until the game is decided one way or the other. Jacobs should be considered a No. 2 running back against New England and their talented defensive front.

12/24/07
New York running back Brandon Jacobs had a monster day Sunday as the Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills 38-21 Sunday. Jacobs left the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and returned briefly before being sidelined for the rest of the game. Jacobs carried the ball 24 times for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns while also catching 1 pass for 6 yards in the game. "I'm very proud," said Jacobs. "I'm proud of my team. I'm proud of the defense. It means a lot."
Huddle Up: According to reports close to the team the injury to Jacobs does not appear too serious and the talented running back should see action in Week 17 against the New England Patriots barring any setbacks during practice this week.

12/04/07
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said Monday he expects Jacobs to return against the Eagles. Jacobs will be desperately needed because Derrick Ward will likely be placed on injured reserve due to a broken leg.
Huddle Up: Jacobs would be worth starting consideration, but remember that the Giants also like to give the ball to Reuben Droughns in goal line situations.

11/23/07
The New York Giants will almost certainly be without Brandon Jacobs this week when they face the visiting Vikings. Derrick Ward has been limited in practice but barring a setback is expected to get some playing time along with Reuben Droughns and even possibly Ahmad Bradshaw.
Huddle Up: It's a bad match-up against one of the best rushing defenses in the league anyway, and now the backfield looks even more muddled this week. Ward has the most talent and promise of all the available runners but is still a risk since he still is not 100% yet.

11/19/07
RB Brandon Jacobs was injured Sunday in the third quarter of the contest with the Detroit Lions. Jacobs appeared to injure his hamstring on the play and limped off the field not to return. The starting running back for the Giants had 54 yards on 11 carries and added another 49 yards on 4 receptions before exiting. He also had 1 touchdown and 1 fumble to add to his stats.
Huddle Up: Jacobs will be evaluated during the week and will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Reuben Droughns if he is unable to play in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings.
