2007 Outlook

James is 29 years old and is four years past his knee injury in 2001. James rushed for 1159 yards last year but had only a 3.4 yard average – not that shocking for a Cardinal’s runner and even a bit impressive compared to previous years. What is hidden inside that total is that James only gained 2.9 yards per carry in the first eight games but had 4.2 YPC in the second half of the season. He turned in three 100+ yard rushing games over the final five weeks as well. The offensive line was starting to come together better later in the season.

The change to HC Ken Whisenhunt from Pittsburgh can only spell better days for James contrasted to the wide open offense of Denny Green. James had 337 carries last year – coincidentally the same number as Willie Parker had last year with Whisenhunt. But Parker gained almost an additional 350 yards thanks to a better offensive line. One of the first steps Whisenhunt and company made was to acquire OT Mike Gandy and draft OT Levi Brown with their 1.05 draft pick. They acquired C Al Johnson from the Cowboys to compete with Nick Leckey. If there is one area that should show improvement with the addition of Whisenhunt, is that the offensive line controlled by Russ Grimm will be an upgrade from last year. If they can replicate their success in Pittsburgh, this line eventually could become better than any ever seen in a Cardinals uniform. And that all directly benefits James.

Recent Priority News

09/11/07
The Edge broke out for 92 yards and a score against San Francisco.
Huddle Up: James didn't have to share the ball very much with backups J.J. Arrington and Marcel Shipp, as he had 26 rushes and two receptions. But if Matt Leinart continues to struggle, James' production will suffer. Run James against the Seahawks if you must, but temper your expectations.

12/26/06
Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James, despite a subpar year for his lofty standards, became the Cardinals first 1,000 yard rusher since Adrian Murrell did it eight years ago in 1998, after gaining 105 yards on 29 carries in week sixteen.
Huddle Up: Despite the franchise milestone, James and the Cardinals in gerneral, was a fantasy football disappointment in 2006 and will look to vastly improve next year.

12/04/06
Running back Edgerrin James finally showed the Cardinals and their fans the reason why he was brought to Arizona. On a day when the Rams were playing at home and for a potential playoff berth, James rushed 26 times for 115 yards but did not get into the endzone because the Cardinals let Marcel ship get the goal line carries. "I had an opportunity to go in, and I said, 'No, let Shipp go in,"' James said, "because they've been so supportive of me in practice and everything." Backup Marcel Shipp carried the ball 7 times for 21 yards and scored 3 touchdowns.
Huddle Up: Despite the great effort in this game don't count on James to be a consistent contributor of points for fantasy teams. This is mainly due to the fact that the Cardinals will continue to fall behind and abandon the ground attack. James should be considered as a low-end No. 2 back until he shows more consistency.

10/20/06
Frustrated Arizona RB Edgerrin James thinks the hiring of Mike Kruczek as offensive coordinator will help the Cardinals' anemic rushing attack. Kruczek has promised to open up the passing game to help create more running lanes.
Huddle Up: It's definitely not a workload problem. James has carried 148 times through six games this season vs. 142 last year, but his yards per carry have dropped from 4.7 to 2.7. If he doesn't break out against Oakland's lousy rush D, he could be fodder for the waiver wire in most leagues.

10/13/06
Cardinal RB Edgerrin James has decided to quit complaining and just try to make the most out of the carries he gets. And that's a pretty big number, as his 112 rushing attempts are only one behind Steven Jackson and Willis McGahee for the NFL lead.
Huddle Up: James has yet to rush for 100 yards in a game this season, and has been stopped for no gain or lost yardage on 15 of his last 44 runs, or 34 percent. He needs to ride your pine against the tough Chicago D. In Week 7, however, run him out agianst the Raiders.

09/28/06
Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green stated this week that he would like franchise running back Edgerrin James to average 25 carries per game.
Huddle Up: James owners couldn't agree more with Coach Green and will likely see that occur as the season progresses.
