2007 Outlook

Julius Jones has managed a nice progression in his three seasons in Dallas, increasing his games played finally to all 16 last year and increasing his carries and yardage every year up to his 1084 rushing yards in 2006 – his first 1000 yard season. As great as that must feel, the reality is that he only scored four touchdowns last year while teammate Marion Barber had 14 to place 3rd best in the NFL. And Barber also gained 654 rushing yards last year. Now that HC Wade Phillips has arrived from San Diego, he finds that he has another LaDainian Tomlinson… it just requires two players combined to get those numbers.

While the offense is due for some scheme change under new OC Jason Garrett, there’s absolutely no reason why it won’t remain largely the same and especially in the backfield. Jones has far more speed than Barber has and can break a long gainer at any time. He’s had runs of at least 50 yards every season. But Jones style and ability does not lend itself well to goal line duty where he pales in comparison to what Barber does. There were rumors that Jones was on the trading block this year which were refuted by the Cowboys and he will remain as the starting tailback in a true RBBC scheme. There’s just no reason to change what works well. Jones even lost his role as a receiver in 2006 when he ended with only 9 catches for 142 yards. Consider Jones as a bit higher risk from the chance that Barber could be used more this year.

Recent Priority News

03/07/08
The Seattle Seahawks are reported to have reached terms with Julius Jones on an undisclosed contract. While Jones has been on decline in Dallas, his only game against the Seahawks came in 2004 when he ran for a career high 198 yards and scored three times. Evidently that one game really stuck with the Seahawks.
Huddle Up: The move casts more doubt on the role of Shaun Alexander this year if in fact he remains in the plans. Jones was losing ground to Marion Barber the last two years and the change of scenery can only help his career.

10/17/06
Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones, with last weekend's 106 rushing yards on 22 carries against the Texans, became the first Cowboys RB since Emmitt Smith in 2000 to record three consecutive 100-yard rushing games.
Huddle Up: Jones has really started to trend up in the month of October and should continue to benefit from Terrell Owens becoming more comfortable in the Cowboys offense, creating more problems for opposing defenses, and more room for Jones to run.

10/02/06
Dallas running back Julius Jones looked great Sunday in the Cowboys 45-14 win over the hapless Titans. Jones, the fourth year running back from Notre Dame, carried the ball 23 times for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Huddle Up: Jones has looked impressive this season and will continue to serve your fantasy team well as a No. 1 running back option. Dallas works well to open running lanes for Jones upfront.

08/10/06
Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells is planning on giving meaningful playing time to RBs Julius Jones, Marion Barber III and Tyson Thompson throughout the season. Jones will technically be the starter, with Barber and Thompson receiving even larger roles in the running attack than they had last year.
Huddle Up: Thanks for going all Mike Shanahan on us, Bill. There goes Julius Jones once promising fantasy football career, tossed into the RBBC scrap heap.

11/21/05
In the win over Detroit last Sunday, Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones had his best game in weeks rushing for 92 yards on 21 carries, the maximum amount that Bill Parcells wants him to tote per game. Parcells envisions giving rookie Marion Barber III around 15 carries per contest as a way to keep both of his top backs healthy and effective through the critical December stretch of the season.
Huddle Up: Jones has fallen far from his first round fantasy pick status at the beginning of the season mainly due to his inability to stay healthy. Whereas Marion Barber III now appears to be the fantasy back of choice in the Dallas backfield since the rookie has been added to the goal line packages as well as being elusive enough to break long gains like Jones.

11/17/05
Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones (ankle), despite playing last Monday night against the Eagles, is not back to 100% health. Jones stated on Wednesday, November 16th, "I'm not making any excuses or anything. But right now, I'd have to say no, I'm not 100 percent." Jones does intend to play this Sunday against Detroit.
Huddle Up: Right now, and possibly long term, Marion Barber is the Cowboys running back of choice for your fantasy lineups.
