2007 Outlook

Jones suffered a Lis Franc dislocation in his foot near the end of last season and missed the final three games. He had surgery in January and the prognosis for his injury ranges from being ready in time for training camp to missing the entire 2007 season – all depending on whom you ask. Jones claims to be ahead of schedule and has the goal of being ready for training camp but the situation bears monitoring and offers big risks for those of you with early summer drafts.

Jones only gained 689 yards on 181 carries (3.8 YPC) last year before being sidelined for the rest of the season. He scored six rushing touchdowns in the 12 games played though they only came in four different games. He added two more scores via receptions and was becoming equally as dangerous as a receiver with 61 catches for 529 yards. He was a good fit into the new Martz offense but as always, his season ended early thanks to injury. Jones is a definite watch in training camp to see how well he is recovering and what his 2007 may or may not hold. The Lions acquired Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett in the offseason, so there’s less reason to rush Jones back if not needed. After three years in the NFL, Jones still has yet to play a full 16 game season. Depending on his health, he could be a nice pick-up in leagues with reception points that would be cheaper to draft and yet could come on later in the year at worst. As of June, Jones has progressed to running and doing some cutting so his goal of being ready for training camp still exists. If he takes longer and yet still is ready for the first week of the season, he'll be fine with that but it makes the injury prone back a big risk to draft with undeniable upside.

08-31-07 Update: Jones is strongly speculated to be placed on the PUP list to start the season which would have him miss the first five games. Once returned, he could be a surprise until he gets hurt again. But his risk is so big he should only be RB depth for you and even then not one to rely on to cover a bye week.

08-01-07 Update: Jones has started training camp on the PUP list and his return date is not yet known. The risk for Jones is no less though the team has hinted he could be back soon. "Could" is the operative word here. He can run straight but still does not have confidence with cutting.

Recent Priority News

08/22/08
Chicago Bears RB Kevin Jones had three carries for 30 yards during the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 21.
Huddle Up: Just seeing the oft-injured Jones on the field is good news for the Bears, though it does take a little of the shine off rookie Matt Forte if Chicago starts working Jones into the backfield mix. It's also worth noting that Jones' first carry went for 34 yards, while his next two went for one and minus-five.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said RB Kevin Jones (knee) looked good during the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 21.
Huddle Up: This is just what the Chicago Bears ordered when they signed the veteran RB Kevin Jones to shore up its running back depth in Chicago. Jones gives the Bears a solid option behind projected starter Matt Forte just in case the rookie has problems early on and the Bears need a more experienced runner. As long as Jones can stay on the field he will be a must have insurance policy for fantasy owners that are drafting Matt Forte in the middle to latter rounds of fantasy drafts. There is a possibility that Jones could even take the starting job early on in the season if the rookie struggles.

Reconstructive Knee Surgery - In a surprising move the Chicago Bears have activated RB Kevin Jones from the PUP list and while he will remain limited in practice this indicates that he is close to competing with rookie Matt Forte for the starting job. Jones, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his knee, wasn't expected to be back in time until sometime after the start of the regular season. But he's progressed well over the last few weeks and the Bears' medical staff feels that he is ready to participate in some team drills. Jones recently admitted that his knee still needed some strengthening, but he said that he would be ready to compete for the starting job very soon. Forte has a head start and if the rookie stays healthy I can't picture a scenario in which Jones passes him on the depth chart before Week 1. But Jones does have talent and if he stays healthy (and with his history that is a big "if") there is a chance that he could be a fantasy factor this season.

Reconstructive Knee Surgery - Veteran RB Kevin Jones, who recently signed a one-year contract with the Bears, is still recovering from reconstructive knee surgery and he has been placed on the team's active PUP list for the start of training camp. Jones tore the anterior cruciate ligament and sprained the medical collateral ligament in his right knee during a game in December last year. He had the damage surgically repaired and he missed the remainder of the season as a result. Jones spent several months in an extensive rehabilitation program and according to reports he has made steady progress and the team hopes that he will be cleared for contact sometime in August. Bears' officials aren't sure when he will be removed from the PUP list, but he has been running and working out on the side of the field while the team practiced this week. There are reports that Jones could actually start the regular season on the PUP list, which means he will not be able to play in a regular season game until after Week 6. But he still has over a month to complete his recovery. We will keep you posted on his progress.

The Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears would like RB Kevin Jones (knee) to drop 10 pounds while he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to an interview with Jim Miller and Howard Blazer of SIRIUS NFL Radio. The Bears believe the drop in weight will be easier on Jones' surgically repaired right knee. Jones is currently listed at 228 pounds.
Huddle Up: Depending on who you believe, Jones could end up as a fairly nice surprise this year. He'll be fighting for the starting job and if some reports are true he may have a chance. Regardless of who wins the job, time will be split between Jones, Matt Forte and the other Adrian Peterson, with Forte the logical one to get the most touches as a rookie and the teams' future. Jones is a nice late round flier pick.

07/23/08
ESPN's John Clayton reports Chicago Bears RB Kevin Jones (knee) is expected to start training camp on the team's active physically unable to perform list. Jones feels he is ready to participate but the team is going to be careful with him coming off of a knee injury.
Huddle Up: Players can be taken off PUP at any time during camp so this is not a big deal. Matt Forte signed his contract today and remains the fulltime primary back. Jones mainly was signed to offer veteran depth anyway.
