2007 Outlook
The Jets acquired Jones to help out a rushing attack that ranked 30th in average yards per carry – only 3.5 yards. Jones has been in the league for seven years and at the age of 29 has finally had two decent seasons. In 2005 in Chicago, he ran for 1335 on 314 carries and nine scores – all career marks. Last season while he shared more with Cedric Benson, Jones only gained 1210 yards and had six touchdowns. That’s still light years away from what any Jets back could do in HC Eric Mangini’s first season as a new head coach.
Jones will take the primary role here but he won’t be alone thanks to the brief success of Leon Washington who will provide a nice complementary style to the power rusher of Jones. The Jets running backs combined for 426 carries in 2006, so there’s still plenty of room for Jones to get a full load but the offensive line is still coming together and the passing game has yet to be anything more than mediocre. Expect Jones to play much the same role as he did in Chicago with similar results on a team that will focus as much on stopping opponents as they will outscoring them.
08-24-07 Update: Jones drops a couple of spots from his calf injury which has kept him off the field. The team still contends that he will be ready for week one but HC Mangini has been livid that anyone has mentioned anything about Jones injury because he wants the New England model of "I ain't saying" when it comes to injuries. That makes Jones a higher risk each week to rely on.
Recent Priority News
11/19/07
Thomas Jones finally turned in a good performance for the New York Jets and led the team to an impressive 19-16 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jones, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears in the offseason, carried the ball 30 times for 117 yards to lead all rushers in the game.
Huddle Up: Despite the solid outing by Jones, fantasy owners should not expect the same type of numbers in Week 12 as the Jets battle the Cowboys on Thanksgiving day. Jones will have some nice matchups after Week 12 as he faces Miami and Cleveland leading up to the fantasy playoffs.
09/08/07
New York RB Thomas Jones has missed the last few weeks of the preseason with a strained calf injury but is back to practice. I'm feeling a lot better," Jones said. "The trainers have done a great job of getting me back on the practice field and getting me to go through some drills and things like that," he said. "So, we'll see how I feel on Sunday."
Huddle Up: Expect the Jets to start Thomas Jones when the Jets take the field Sunday against the New England Patriots. It is likely the the running back will see a lighter workload than he normally would but they will be cautious to avoid further injury. Look for backup Leon Washington to pickup the slack this week and get more touches especially on pass plays out of the backfield.
09/04/07
For the first time since his August 12th injury, Thomas Jones participated in practice with the New York Jets on Monday. Coach Mangini said, "I definitely think it's important to work with the group as much as you can. The one thing that's different is when you have a veteran player who's been exposed to multiple systems."
Huddle Up: Barring any further injury to his calf, look for Thomas Jones to be ready to go in the Jets opener this week against the New England Patriots. Backup RB Leon Washington will most likely see a fair amount of carries in the game as well since the Jets will likely ease Jones back in with less than a full workload.
08/14/07
Jet RB Thomas Jones is week-to-week with a strained right calf muscle,
according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Huddle Up: Rosenhaus said Jones told him he was confident he'd be ready to go for the
Jets' opener against New England. Jones is a strong second-tier fantasy
running back and would be an excellent early third-round pick. If he lasts
that long, that is.
08/12/07
RB Thomas Jones of the New York Jets injured his lower right leg on Sunday at practice during running back drills. The Jets acquired Jones in the offseason from the Chicago Bears to become the bona fide workhorse running back.
Huddle Up: The severity of the injury is not yet known although Jones was seen putting weight on the leg and moving his ankle so it appears it may not be serious. RB Leon Washington is the backup to Thomas Jones with the Jets just in case the injury keeps him out for any length of time. The Huddle will continue to update this story as it unfolds further.
03/05/07
The Chicago Bears have arranged a trade of running back Thomas Jones to the New York Jets in exchange for the Jets' second round selection (37th overall). The Jets will also receive the Bears second round pick (63rd overall).
Huddle Up: So far this could be one of the most significant moves in the offseason in fantasy terms. Jones leaves Cedric Benson as the starter in Chicago and now heads to the Jets to hopefully resolve their extensive committee approach last season. The Jets offense should see a nice improvement with Jones and Leon Washington for third down, relief work.
