2007 Outlook
The Browns acquired Lewis this offseason to recharge a lethargic rushing attack but unless they can also turn the clock back to 2003 (and acquire a new offensive line), the results may not meet expectations. The Browns only gained 83 rushing yards per game in 2006 to rank 31st in the NFL and their 3.6 yards per carry ranked only 29th. Lewis only gained 3.6 yards per carry himself in 2006 and that was even up from 3.4 yards in 2005. The Browns have not had more than four touchdowns by running backs since HC Romeo Crennel came to town. While Lewis may be better than Reuben Droughns, consider the change that Droughns had when he swapped the Broncos for the Browns.
Making this even a little worse, the Browns have a very tough schedule yet again this year including an opening stretch against PIT, CIN, OAK, BAL and NE. The Browns used their first pick on OT Joe Thomas to help out their traditionally bad line play along with a couple of other free agents but the team is installing a new offense, has new players and may even have a new quarterback. Lewis hasn’t shown much since his record setting 2003 season despite only being 28 years old this year. Tough spot for Lewis to turn his career back around. Lewis had arthroscopic surgery to clean out some bone spurs in his ankle but that is not expected to impede his ability to gain 3.6 yards per carry again this year.
Recent Priority News
09/05/08
The Medina County Gazette reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis (hamstring) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 5. He is listed as questionable for Week 1 and will be a game-time decision.
Huddle Up: Jerome Harrison would be the guy to start if Lewis can't go, so if you handcuffed you should be in decent shape by going with Harrison either way. If you didn't and only have Lewis, look somewhere else. Not only is this a matchup against a good defense, but starting Lewis this week has implosion written all over it.
09/01/08
Strained Hamstring - Browns' veteran RB Jamal Lewis, who has missed the team's final two exhibition games because of a mild hamstring strain, is expected to practice with the team this week and he should be in the starting lineup for the team's Week 1 game. Head coach Romeo Crennel told reporters that Lewis has shown signs of improvement over the last couple of weeks and that he believes that Lewis will be cleared to play in the team's season opener. Lewis recently said that his hamstring is feeling better and that he feels that he is ready for Week 1. Crennel believes that Lewis will be cleared to play this upcoming weekend and at this point there is no reason to believe that he won't.
08/21/08
The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis (hamstring) is not expected to play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 23. He did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Huddle Up: Head coach Romeo Crennel said he didn't think the injury was major, for whatever that's worth, but it's still troubling news. Lewis could be a massive pickup for those savvy enough to try and get him in the third or fourth round. He's flying under the radar in a lot of leagues, but if he's healthy enough to put in a full season, the nature of the Browns' explosive offense should provide plenty of holes for him to run through. Hamstring injuries, of course, are an extremely frustrating occurrence for fantasy players. But for now, don't downgrade Lewis. See if he's practicing early in the week before you make your final decision on him.
12/31/07
RB Jamal Lewis continued his second half resurgence Sunday as he carried the ball 26 times for 128 yards to lead all rushers in Week 17. Despite the strong performance the Cleveland Browns failed to make the playoffs after finishing with a strong 10-6 record. "We are disappointed that we didn't reach the playoffs, however, we had a good year," coach Crennel said. "We've learned a lot, grown a lot and look forward to continuing to build on what we've accomplished this season."
Huddle Up: The Browns are poised nicely for 2008 as they have come into their own this season and seem to have all the ingredients in place for the future. This is a young up and coming team that could be a major force to deal with in 2008 so fantasy owners should keep that in mind prior to drafting next years squads. Lewis will be the featured back in Cleveland and has proven he is capable of carrying the load and the team on his back at times. He should be considered a strong RB 2 next year.
12/17/07
Browns running back Jamal Lewis carried the ball 33 times for 163 yards in blizzard conditions to lead the Cleveland Browns over the Buffalo Bills 8-0.
Huddle Up: Regardless of the poor playing conditions, Lewis was the top rusher in the league for Week 15 and carried the Browns offense all day long. Expect more of the same in Week 16 as the Browns take on the Bengals in Cincinnati. Lewis is a solid No. 2 RB and should continue to produce consistent fantasy points for the rest of the year.
12/13/07
Jamal Lewis only signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns but with 921 rushing yards already this season, he is enjoying the benefits of an upgraded line with an explosive passing game. Lewis says he is not worried about his contract status. "If we can get something done, we'll get it done," he said. "That's not my main focus right now. My main focus is to go out and win and just keep doing better. I told (GM Phil Savage) I would come here and do my job and make him proud."
Huddle Up: The Browns have finally assembled an offense that can win games and rejuvenated Lewis' career in the process. When asked if he would sign another one-year contract, Lewis said, "I would do one-year deals all day long. I don't care. I really don't."
