2007 Outlook
Perhaps a small surprise in the NFL draft was that the Falcons did not select a big back to run the ball. HC Bobby Petrino comes in with a penchant for a huge offensive linemen and big running backs but Norwood is only 205 pounds. He has the speed to run the distance but Norwood is not going to knock anyone out of the way. He led all NFL tailbacks last year when he averaged 6.4 yards per carry on his 99 runs in 2006. That was boosted by two games with over 100 rushing yards despite having less than 10 carries in each. On the fast track of the Georgia Dome, Norwood is a burner when he gets free so he’s a surprising choice to head up the rush attack for the Falcons. But compared to Warrick Dunn who rings in at only about 180 pounds and 32 years of age.
With Dunn aging, Norwood is the best option in this offense though initially Dunn could be given more carries. But there’s no future in a smallish 32 year-old back so Norwood should supplant him as the primary back sooner than later. The NFL is full of two man backfields and the Falcons are likely to be yet another under Petrino. Until there is a more clear indication from the team, the best assumption is that Norwood and Dunn split carries at least initially with Norwood taking a slightly heavier share as the season progresses. There is definite upside here with Norwood having a shot at playing well and pushing Dunn down to a third down back but there’s also risk that the duo just split all year and Petrino just gets his big back in the draft next year.
07-27-07 Update: Norwood only bumps up a spot but he is looking great in camp and just as importantly, Warrick Dunn is not there as he recuperates from back surgery. This is a new offense and Norwood is doing the right things at the right time.
Recent Priority News
12/04/07
Falcon head coach Bobby Petrino said he will do
whatever he can to get Norwood more involved this
week against the Saints.
"We have to get Jerious touches," Petrino said. "When
you watch the video, he's the most explosive player out
there for us. His speed shows up. He makes big plays,
whether it's catching the ball or running the ball; so it is
a situation where we have to get him more touches one
way or the other."
Huddle Up: Norwood could be a super sleeper this week against
the porous New Orleans defense. If you have issues at
running back, and Norwood is available, he'd be worth
picking up.

Norwood, still bothered by an ankle injury, sat out of
practice Thursday. "As of right now it's feeling a lot
better, but it's still kind of sore," he told the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution. "Hopefully it will be feeling better
[Friday], and I'll just go out and see what it feels like."
Huddle Up: If Norwood can't go, Warrick Dunn will get the chance to
carry the rushing load for Atlanta again. He had 100
yards on 27 carries last Sunday against San Francisco.
08/11/07
RB Jerious Norwood ran the ball well in limited action in the preseason contest with the New York Jets on Friday night. The talented runner out of Mississippi State, carried the ball 8 times for 29 yards which included a 10-yard TD scamper. Norwood also caught 2 passes for another 10 yards.
Huddle Up: Norwood could be the catalyst this season to give the fantasy owners that draft him the firepower that they need to run to a championship. Look for Norwood to develop into a star providing that he doesn't get injured. He has a great opportunity to show his stuff in the preseason since last years starter Warrick Dunn is out for several weeks recovering from an injury.
01/01/07
RB Jerious Norwood of the Atlanta Falcons showed why he is likely to be the starter for the Falcons in 2007. The rookie runner from Mississippi State carried the ball 10 times for 63 yards Sunday while the starter Warrick Dunn carried the ball 19 times for 58 yards. Norwood has looked good in limited action this season for the Falcons and is expected to take over the starting duties in 2007.
Huddle Up: Norwood could be a stud running back in 2007 since he has the physical strength and speed to dominate in the NFL. He is worth his weight in gold in Keeper leagues and will be a great sleeper pick in seasonal leagues in 2007.
12/15/06
Atlanta rookie RB Jerious Norwood returned to practice
on Thursday, easing concerns that his strained right
knee will allow him to play Saturday against Dallas.
Warrick Dunn, however, did not practice due to a
strained calf.
Huddle Up: Both are listed as questionable and are game-time
decisions. If Dunn doesn't play, either Norwood will get
the lion's share of carries or Justin Griffith will get a lot
of action.
12/13/06
Jerious Norwood re-sprained his right knee during the game in Tampa Bay last Sundy. This is the same problem that Norwood had last month and will likely keep him out this week.
Huddle Up: Norwood has been a solid runner in his limited playing time but the Falcons will be taking it easy on him after this reoccurence of the knee injury. He's likely to be out on Saturday and could miss more time.
