2007 Outlook

Rhodes signed with the Raiders on a two-year contract worth up to $7.5 million and he’ll mix in with Lamont Jordan in the new Raiders’ backfield. Rhodes comes off a solid season in Indianapolis where he ran 187 times for 641 yards and five touchdowns and added 36 catches for 251 more yards. He was instrumental in the Colts Super Bowl victory and now goes from first to worst by joining the Raiders. The new offense installed by OC Greg Knapp should be similar to the same one he has run in Atlanta which is a west coast variant that doesn’t make much use of running backs as receivers. This should be a little clearer by the time the season starts, but the expectation is that Rhodes will work in the mix with Lamont Jordan and even eventually Michael Bush. Rhodes is a solid but unspectacular runner who is a bit undersized for goal line work at only around 200 pounds, particularly with the much bulkier Jordan and Bush on the roster. Rhodes pled guilty to reckless driving in the offseason and had the drunken driving charges dropped. It is not expected to impact his availability this season.

07-03-20 Update: Rhodes has been suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the league's substance abuse policy. He can still attend training camp and play in preseason games, but then must leave the team for the first month. This obviously puts a dent in his season totals but he will still be a part of the backfield when he returns.

Recent Priority News

11/06/08
Indianapolis Colts RB Dominic Rhodes is averaging 3.6 yards per carry, while RB Joseph Addai is averaging 3.1 yards per rush.
Huddle Up: It's hard to foresee those numbers increasing against Pittsburgh's extremely tough run defense.

10/20/08
The Associated Press reports Indianapolis Colts RB Dominic Rhodes rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the team's Week 7 game.
Huddle Up: Filling in for the injured Joseph Addai, Rhodes was one of the few Colts who was on his game against the Packers. His second touchdown came after apparent scores by Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark were overturned by the replay booth.

05/07/08
According to the Indianapolis Star, RB Dominic Rhodes has agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Indianapolis Colts worth $650,000. Rhodes had 75 carries for 302 yards and 1 touchdown for the Oakland Raiders in 2007.
Huddle Up: Rhodes was brought back to bolster the Indianapolis running game and provide a quality backup to starter Joseph Addai. It seems likely that this could be a sign that current backup Kenton Keith's days in Indianapolis could be numbered due to his offseason legal troubles. Indy will also have rookie RB Mike Hart from Michigan to compete for carries and a roster spot with the Colts.

04/29/08
Just two days after selecting RB Darren McFadden of Arkansas with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders will be parting ways with backup running back Dominic Rhodes. The 29 year old Rhodes was suspended for four games last season due to violating the leagues substance abuse policy.
Huddle Up: The veteran running back that formerly played for the Indianapolis Colts on their Super Bowl winning team, will likely be picked up by another team in the near future looking for experienced running back depth for their roster. Rhodes should not be considered worthy of fantasy consideration unless he lands with a team and secures a starting job prior to the start of the season. Rhodes carried the ball 75 times for 302 yards in 2007.

12/31/07
RB Dominic Rhodes turned in his second consecutive stellar game Sunday against the San Diego Chargers to end the 2007 season. Rhodes rushed the ball 29 times for 122 yards and 1 touchdown while also adding 6 receptions for another 42 yards in the 30-17 loss to San Diego.
Huddle Up: Rhodes has carried the entire load for the Raiders the last two games and has solidified his chances of returning to the team in 2008. Fantasy owners should monitor the Oakland offseason moves to see if they bring in a big name runner but at the present time it appears that Rhodes, Fargas and Michael Bush will compete for the job. It is likely that RB Lamont Jordan will be on another team in 2008.

12/24/07
Oakland RB Dominic Rhodes solidified his role as the starting running back for the Raiders Sunday as he carried the ball 27 times for 115 yards and caught 2 passes for 9 yards. Rhodes is filling in for the injured starter Justin Fargas who was lost for the remainder of the season in Week 15.
Huddle Up: Rhodes could turn in another nice game in Week 17 as the Raiders battle the San Diego Chargers to end the year. He should be considered a No. 3 running back with some upside for that contest since he is also capable of catching passes out of the backfield.
