2007 Outlook
Taylor was given a four-year, $14 million contract in 2006 to be the new starting tailback for the Brad Childress led Vikings and he responded with a season that dwarfed anything he had in Baltimore as a back-up to Jamal Lewis. Taylor ran for 1216 yards on 303 carries with six touchdowns and also caught 42 passes for 288 yards. He ranked 9th in the NFL for rushing yardage and became the main focus of the offense that wasn’t setting any records with their passing game (at least not any good records). He enjoyed one of the better offensive lines going against one of the softer schedules and ended with a 4.0 yard rushing average – a bit lower than seemed appropriate.
The problem was that Taylor started out much better than he ended. Through the first twelve games, he averaged 22 carries for 92 rushing yards but over the last half of the season, but he wore down as the season started to end and suffered some bruised ribs. HC Childress wanted to reduce the workload of Taylor and spell him more this year so the team drafted “the" best running back in Adrian Peterson. Burning a 7th overall pick in the draft is not usually done to obtain a “relief player". Taylor will be the starter entering the season but it would be no surprise to see him end as the #2 back with the talented Peterson running against the same defenses behind the same offensive line.
Taylor is a definite need pick if you own Peterson (and vice-a-versa) but he’ll likely come as a good value in drafts since Peterson has the hype to make people heavily discount Taylor. Granted - there is a huge risk that he may lose more and more playing time to Peterson, but at a minimum his early season work should have fantasy value and if Peterson continues to have injury problems as he did in college, then Taylor is right back where he was in 2006. Peterson could keep Taylor fresher for longer and actually be a reason why Taylor plays as much for the whole season.
Recent Priority News
07/29/08
The Pioneer Press reports the Minnesota Vikings believe the growth of QB Tarvaris Jackson and addition of deep-threat WR Bernard Berrian will cause problems for defenses looking to shut down RBs Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor in 2008. 'We're going to be a balanced offense this year,' Peterson said. 'If guys want to stack nine (players) in the box for me and Ches, we'll beat them deep.'
Huddle Up: There is certainly alot to like about the Vikings this year and the Minnesota running game will lead the way. If Tavaris Jackson can move his play to the next level and take some pressure of Peterson and Taylor then the Vikings are an instant Super Bowl contender. If for some reason Brett Favre finds his way to Minnesota then they should be considered the team to beat in the NFC. However, there is virtually no chance that the Packers will allow their future Hall of Famer to end up with a division rival like Minnesota.
11/19/07
Minnesota RB Chester Taylor exploded Sunday in relief of injured star rookie running back Adrian Peterson. Taylor looked strong all day long as he rushed the ball 22 times for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 29-22 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Taylor also caught 3 passes for 38 yards in the contest. "I ain't the one to start no controversy," Taylor said. "I knew I could do what I did in the game. I'm going to play hard no matter what, and if I get the opportunity I'm going to take advantage of it."
Huddle Up: Despite the outstanding performance by Taylor look for RB Adrian Peterson to return to the starting role for Minnesota upon his return from injury in Week 13.
RB Chester Taylor will likely get the start in Week 12 against the tough run defense of the N.Y. Giants and is most likely auditioning for job with another new team for next season due to the emergence of the rookie Adrian Peterson.
09/29/07
RB Chester Taylor is expected back to the Minnesota lineup on Sunday for the Vikings Week 4 tilt against the Green Bay Packers. Taylor, who has been out with a strained oblique, will start after being out of action for the last two games. "He’ll start the game," Childress said, "and Adrian [Peterson] will be in after him."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should expect some reduced fantasy production from Adrian Peterson who has been outstanding filling in for the injured Chester Taylor. It is likely that both Taylor and Peterson will get about the same number of carries which will return the Vikings to a running back by committee situation at least for the short term.
09/15/07
RB Chester Taylor of the Minnesota Vikings sat out practice on Friday and will likely be held out of the contest Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Taylor sustained a hip injury in Minnesota's season opener last week.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners look for RB Adrian Peterson to get a heavy workload this week for the Vikings. The rookie running back from Oklahoma can establish himself further as the Minnesota premier ball carrier with a good performance against a weak run defense of the Detroit Lions. Start Peterson in all leagues this week.
09/11/07
Minnesota HC Brad Childress said the oblique injury
sustained by Chester Taylor shouldn't keep him from
playing against Detroit.
Huddle Up: Childress said he plans on retaining the two-back
approach despite the sterling performance turned in by
rookie Adrian Peterson (103 yards rushing, 60-yard TD
reception). That sounds good, but the youngster is too
strong not to be the featured back. Childress could be
saying this just so that Taylor's feelings don't get hurt.
Run Peterson without hesitation against the Lions.
Taylor, on the other hand, should probably ride your
pine if you have another viable RB option.
09/07/07
The Minnesota Vikings have two talented running backs available for action when the NFL season starts for them on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Chester Taylor, who was signed last season to a 4-year, $14.1 million contract, is listed as the Vikings starter and was brought in to be the workhorse back that Minnesota was lacking. Peterson was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft this season and will add another dimension to the Viking attack. "We are going to be on the field at the same time, together," Peterson said. "We'll be able to throw the defense off a little bit. You'll definitely see that."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should consider this a running back by committee for the present time. However, it is clear that the future running back of the team is Adrian Peterson and he will likely take over the full load in the very near future.
