2007 Outlook
The 31-year old Taylor hangs on for one more year at least and he comes off a rather standard year with only one game missed and 1146 rushing yards with five touchdowns (his highest since 2003). Of course everyone else was watching Maurice Jones-Drew catch on fire mid-season and end up rushing for 13 touchdowns - more than Taylor has scored since his rookie season in 1998. But playing with the rookie actually helped Taylor be more effective. His 5.0 yards per carry in 2006 was a career high and 8th best in the NFL.
As if determining the ratio of sharing between he and Jones-Drew wasn't hard enough, the Jaguars have a new offensive coordinator with Dirk Koetter and a whole new scheme which should be no less heavy on the run. Training camp should help sort this out more but after the performance by Jones-Drew in the second half of the 2006 season, it would be ridiculous to assume that Taylor is going to take a heavy load and Jones-Drew is just going to offer relief. Taylor nursed a balky hamstring for the final month of the season and Jones-Drew racked up six scores and 441 rushing yards for those final four games. But the Jaguars just signed Taylor to a three-year extension worth $23 million so there's no expectation that Taylor is riding the pine this year. He may not fulfill that contract completely, but he'll be in the mix this season. That will decrease what Jones-Drew alone could have done but Taylor won't have nearly the proportion of carries that he once had.
Recent Priority News
10/12/08
NFL.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor (head) returned to the team's Week 6 game in the third quarter. He had left the game in the first half because of a head injury.
Huddle Up: Good news for the Jaguars as RB Fred Taylor returned to the field but finished the day with a dismal 30 yards rushing on just 3 carries. He also had 1 reception for 10 yards and 1 fumble on the day. This was certainly not the best of days for Taylor but his running mate Jones-Drew picked up the slack with 22 carries for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 24-17 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 6.
09/25/08
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor (hand) was limited in practice Thursday, Sept. 25, but he should be OK.
Huddle Up: Look for Taylor to be ready to go in Week 4 against the Houston Texans. With Jones-Drew also nursing an injury to his ankle, Taylor could see an increased presence in the offense this week. He should be considered a No. 3 running back at the present time.
09/07/08
The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor's streak of five consecutive regular-season games with at least 100 yards rushing was snapped Week 1. He only had 18 yards on nine carries in the game.
Huddle Up: This is a bit disconcerting in a way. Sure he's a bit old for a running back, but things looked so good last year with he and Jones-Drew splitting time that it was expected to continue at least another year or two. It still may, but for at least one day it looked a little bit like the end could be near for one of the better, yet most frustrating, backs in the league.
08/30/08
The Miami Herald reports Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor was arrested for disorderly conduct outside a Miami Beach nightclub early Saturday morning. Taylor was not taken into custody but was instead released on his own personal recognizance with the promise to appear in court. The exact circumstances as to why he was arrested are unknown.
Huddle Up: This is a distraction the Jaguars could have done without with the regular season set to begin next week. Taylor has been running in tandem with Maurice Jones-Drew the last couple of seasons but could be facing some type of a suspension by the league which could result in him losing carries. Fantasy owners should still consider Taylor a nice No. 3 running back but Jones-Drew could see more action due to this incident and should be considered the primary back if he wasn't already.
01/09/08
Jaguars veteran running back Fred Taylor was named to the Pro-Bowl team to replace the injured Willie Parker who sustained a broken leg two weeks ago. "He's very excited about receiving that honor," coach Del Rio said. "We're happy for him. Fred's been one of the all-time greats here in Jacksonville. We're very happy for him individually. But I think Fred would tell you he's most excited right now about the opportunity to pursue a championship."
Huddle Up: Taylor has had a resurgence in his career this season and has been a big part of Jacksonville's success. Even with Maurice Jones-Drew splitting carries with Taylor he has posted Pro-Bowl caliber numbers and should be considered a solid No. 2 running back in 2008 for all fantasy leagues.
12/17/07
Veteran running back Fred Taylor has returned to form this season and continues his pursuit of his initial Pro-Bowl appearance. Taylor was an unstoppable force against a strong Pittsburgh run defense on Sunday as he carried the ball 25 times for 147 yards and 1 touchdown to lead the Jaguars to a 29-22 victory over the Steelers. Taylor scored the winning points on a 12-yard touchdown run during the fourth quarter of the contest. "The outsiders didn't believe we could come in here with the elements on the road, in a hostile territory against a team like Pittsburgh, and win the game," said Taylor. "We were the only ones that believed."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should also believe in the veteran Taylor this season as he has led many teams to a playoff berth as a solid No. 2 running back this year. Jacksonville will play Oakland in Week 16 which could mean another huge game for Fred Taylor and the Jaguars rushing attack. Oakland has one of the worse run defenses in the league and fantasy owners should start both Taylor and Jones-Drew if you have them on your roster.
