2007 Outlook

After two seasons in the NFL and one jersey in the Hall of Fame, Cadillac has actually had two mirror image seasons if you ignore those first three games when he had 434 rushing yards in 2005. Take those away and he’s been right at around 800 rushing yards a season with a couple if scores in each. He increased his receiving totals in 2006 but that still only accounted for 30 catches and 196 yards with no touchdowns. Williams managed one game over 100 yards for 2006 but nine times he came in under 50 rushing yards per effort.

With fantasy playoff match-ups against HOU, ATL and SF, Williams could be of value down the stretch and his schedule overall is much lighter than in 2005 but aside from three magic games to start his career, Williams last 25 games in the NFL have only averaged 3.6 yards per carry and were only 3.5 yards per carry in 2006. There are some in your league that is still impressed with his three game explosion to start 2005. The remaining 25 games say that was a very big aberration.

08-10-07 Update: Williams gets a minor bump with Mike Alstott being placed on injured reserve. Williams has the very best rushing schedule this year that he has ever had in the NFL and the removal of the couple of touchdowns by Alstott can only help.

Recent Priority News

08/26/08
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they have placed RB Cadillac Williams (knee) on the Reserve-Physically Unable to Perform list.
Huddle Up: Since the earliest Williams could return would be Week 6, this at least slightly clears up the Bucs' running back by committee. But their RBBC is still a big one -- those who plan on picking Earnest Graham need to realize he'll not only split time with Michael Bennett and Warrick Dunn, he'll probably also surrender at least a few carries to fullback B.J. Askew.

08/13/08
PewterReport.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said RB Cadillac Williams (knee) is rehabbing and getting close to returning to practice. 'He's getting really close. I can't tell you how excited we are about how far he's come in such a short period of time. I have to keep it in perspective, but we're going to be very smart here and I'm not going to do anything until the trainers give the green light. Right now we're still on yellow and we're still working hard. There's a little bit of caution but boy, he's looking good and we're excited and happy for him,' Gruden said.
Huddle Up: If Williams can return to action as appears to be getting closer from these statements then fantasy owners should expect some type of a running back committee in Tampa Bay this year. Earnest Graham, who has ran well in camp and projected to be the starter for the Bucs, will likely lose some carries to Williams. Expect the team to ease Williams back in slowly until it becomes clearer that he will not be going through any setbacks along the way.

07/23/08
Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Cadillac Williams (knee) will undergo a physical Friday, July 25. He will likely be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Huddle Up: No big surprise since he wasn't expected to be a factor in training camp. The bigger question looms in a month or so when the Bucs have to decide if they want to keep him on the PUP for the start of the season.

07/18/08
The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Cadillac Williams (knee) is expected to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list before the team's training camp begins Saturday, July 26. The team wants to make sure they place Williams on the PUP list before the start of training camp because players who begin the preseason on the active roster cannot then be moved to the PUP list. However, if Williams is placed on the PUP list he will not be able to practice with the team. If Williams remains on the PUP list when the regular season begins he will not be eligible to play until Week 6.
Huddle Up: It looks like the epitome of a Running Back By Committee approach will be taken by the Bucs this season. Earnest Graham performed well as the featured back for a large portion of 2007, but look for him to be spelled quite often by Warrick Dunn (especially on third downs) and Michael Bennett. If Williams does come back near mid-season, the situation will become even more muddled. It would probably be best to avoid any Buccaneer running back this season.

06/30/08
The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Cadillac Williams (knee) will likely start the 2008 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Huddle Up: With the Bucs signing Earnest Graham to a new 4-year contract extension which will keep him in Tampa through the 2011 season, Williams will likely be brought back slowly from his injury. If Tampa does in fact place Cadillac on the PUP list then he will miss the first 6 games of the season and then will have to be evaluated to see if he can return. Fantasy owners should consider Graham the starter and RB Warrick Dunn the backup for Tampa Bay this season but keep Williams in mind for the second half if he is able to return to action as expected.

06/18/08
Tampa Bay RB Cadillac Williams (knee) did several 100-yard sprints during the team's minicamp Tuesday, June 17.
Huddle Up: This is a great sign that Williams is at least on schedule from his season-ending knee injury last season. He still has a long way to go and will have a hard time getting his starting job back from Earnest Graham even if he gets closer to 100%.
