2007 Outlook
The Panthers drafted Williams with their 1.27 pick in the 2006 and it was expected that he would challenge and likely overtake DeShaun Foster for the starting tailback role. After all, Williams had an NCAA record 34 rushing games over 100 yards and gained over 6000 rushing yards at Memphis. But it never happened. Instead, Williams only had 121 carries for 501 yards and just two touchdowns. He was the best receiving running back with 33 receptions for 333 yards but expectations had him gaining that much total yardage by mid-season. He suffered a high ankle sprain in week five and missed the next three games. What was hard to fathom was that the Panthers just did not use him. He had 13 carries for 74 yards at Minnesota (5.6 YPC) but then only had four carries the next week. He had a three week streak of games with 114, 63 and 74 yards starting in week 11 with at least 17 carries in each but then only was given two carries in the next two games. Then 21 carries for 82 yards. They never committed to using him for reasons unknown since the five games in which he had at least 13 carries, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry.
This year the Panthers are installing a new offense by OC Jeff Davidson that not only uses zone blocking, but has a scheme very similar to the one that Williams ran in college. The entire team is excited about the new direction for the offense and perhaps none so much as Williams. The Panthers suffered though offensive line problems for much of the year and a general sense of malaise set in offensively. 2006 was no measuring stick as to what this offense – or Williams in particular – can do. The stage is set for Williams to make good on the expectations of 2006.

The Sporting News reports Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams is expected to be used more this year. Williams has improved his pass protection this offseason, an area of his game that was once considered a liability.
Huddle Up: No longer saddled with the presence of DeShaun Foster eating into his carries, Williams looks poised to be a fantasy sleeper this season. His improvement in pass protection only enhances his value to the team, and should increase his workload. He still has to look over his shoulder at LaBrandon Toefield and rookie James Stewart, but Williams looks like a good candidate to put up some impressive numbers.

RB DeAngelo Williams turned in a stellar performance for the Carolina Panthers Sunday as they defeated the playoff-bound Tampa Bay Bucs 31-23 Sunday. Williams rushed the ball 20 times for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Huddle Up: Williams who has been overshadowed by DeShaun Foster for most of the season ran strong and made his bid for the starting job in Carolina next year. Fantasy owners should consider Williams a prime sleeper in 2008 as he could develop into a solid RB if the Panthers give him the reigns of the offense and 15-20 touches a game. He is a playmaker and his versatility could prove tough for defenses to prepare for while taking pressure off their young quarterback of the future Matt Moore.

Backup RB DeAngelo Williams shined Sunday in the Panthers
31-14 victory over the struggling San Francisco 49ers. Williams, who has been the backup behind starter DeShaun Foster this season, carried the ball 17 times for 82 yards and caught 1 pass for 46 yards in the game.
Huddle Up: With Foster continuing to struggle, the Panthers increased the workload of DeAngelo Williams and he promptly led the team in rushing this week despite Foster getting more carries. Look for Carolina to utilize Williams even more for the rest of the season as they try to determine if he can be their full-time starter over DeShaun Foster for next year. Williams should be considered a No. 3 running back with upside for the present time.
12/05/06
Rookie running back DeAngelo Williams was on his game Monday night despite the Panthers 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams, the Panthers first round pick from Memphis State, carried the ball 17 times for 74 yards and also caught 7 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Huddle Up: Look for Williams to be a stud running back sleeper for the Panthers during fantasy playoff time. Carolina will have the Giants, Steelers and Falcons on their schedule the next three weeks so Williams could be putting up nice numbers with DeShaun Foster out with injury problems.
11/02/06
The Carolina Panthers are optimistic that RB DeAngelo Williams will return to the lineup when the team returns from its bye week on Nov. 13th. Williams, who is returning from a high ankle sprain is looking to pick up right where he left off earlier in the season. When Williams was asked what he was going to do when he returned he said, "Going back to giving them a spark, hopefully. That's what I'm here for."
Huddle Up: DeAngelo Williams could be a second half sleeper so if he is available in your league get him and stash him away. He has tremendous speed and could likely take away the starting running back duties from DeShaun Foster in the near future.
10/28/06
DeAngelo Williams returned to practice on Friday after being held out on Wednesday and Thursday while he recovers from a mild high ankle sprain. He remains questionable to play this week against the visiting Cowboys.
Huddle Up: While encouraging that he returned on Friday, he's still no lock to get any playing time this week and holding him out on Sunday means he would have two more weeks to completely heal since the Panthers go on their bye during week nine. There is still a chance that he may get some playing time but he is not worth a fantasy start this week because of the risk. Since it is the late night game on Sunday, his status won't be known until very late in the day.
