2007 Outlook
For each of his five seasons with the Jets, Baker has increased his yardage but that progression still only amounted to a career best 300 yards on 31 catches in 2006. Baker turned in four touchdowns as well making him a worthy fantasy back-up tight end but his upside by now is very small. His 2005 season was shortened because of injury but in 2004 he had four scores as well. The Jets should have an improved rushing game this year and that won’t help out Baker’s numbers. He’ll remain on the waiver wire in most leagues but could serve as a bye week filler in leagues requiring a tight end. His performance of 2006 was close enough to 2004 to serve as proof that his upper limit has already been realized.
Recent Priority News
11/07/05
Chris Baker suffered a broken ankle against the Chargers last week and has been lost for the season. He will be replaced by Doug Jolley, the presumed starter that he had outperformed in training camp.
Huddle Up: Baker only had three games of any fantasy consequence and his only score on the year came in the season opener when he had 124 yards on seven catches that was roughly as much has he has totaled in the seven games since week one. Jolley only had one catch for 12 yards last week but had a season high of five passes thrown to him.
11/06/05
Jets tight end Chris Baker suffered a broken left ankle in the game Sunday. It's expected that his season is over. Free agent acquisition Doug Jolley will be the starter for the rest of the season.
11/15/04
Baker has broken a bone in his hand according to HC Herman Edwards and may miss significant time. The Jets will likely look to acquire a free agent tight end since the rushing scheme usually employs two tight ends blocking. Baker was also the primary receiving tight end.
