2007 Outlook
Crumpler has been the preferred target of Michael Vick for three years now and he comes off his 2007 season with 780 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns. He’s been consistently around 800 yards and six scores since becoming Vick’s main target. Over the last three seasons, he’s been one of the lowest risk tight ends in the league. His 13.9 yards per catch ranked #1 among all tight ends for 2006.
However – there’s a new sheriff in town named Bobby Petrino that casts some risk on Crumpler continuing on being the common outlet for Michael Vick. There’s zero doubt that Crumpler will not continue to figure into the passing equation but the notion that Petrino will be satisfied with his quarterback ignoring his wideouts and playing pitch and catch with Crumpler is hard to believe. Crumpler only had 56 catches last year and actually gained 117 yards and three scores in just one game. Add in that the Falcons have acquired Joe Horn and the chance that Crumpler continues to lead the wide outs is even lower. If Crumpler does end up as the primary receiver yet again, that will not be a sign of success for this offense. Look for a downturn by Crumpler that really happened last year outside of one “stat saving" game.
07-18-20 Update: The worst thing that could happen to Crumpler would be for anything to happen to Michael Vick - and that is happening with the federal indictment. With a different quarterback, chances are high that Crumpler will see a reduced role since the wide receivers will come into more production - at the expense of Crumpler.
Recent Priority News
11/03/07
The Falcons have listed Alge Crumpler as doubtful to play this week and he has only done minimal work with the scout team. Expect him to be inactive this week.
Huddle Up: The match-up against the 49ers this week would have been a good one but Crumpler has fallen greatly in fantasy value this year without Michael Vick there to rely on him.
11/02/07
Crumpler was inactive for Atlanta's previous game and
it's not looking good this week, either. He's battling
knee and ankle injuries and has no idea when he'll
return.
"I don't have any idea," Crumpler told the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution. "Walking around is one thing.
Functioning is another. I want to function at a high level.
My whole career has been about functioning at a high
level with whatever nicks or bumps I've always had."
Huddle Up: You might as well count on Crumpler being out this
week and go to your Plan B option at tight end.
10/20/07
According to the Falcons injury report for Friday, TE Alge Crumpler is listed as doubtful for the Week 7 contest against the New Orleans Saints. Crumpler failed to practice during the week due to injuries to his knee and ankle.
Huddle Up: Crumpler has not been the dominant TE he has been in the past this season mainly due to the unsettled quarterback play caused by the departure of QB Michael Vick. Fantasy owners should find another option at TE other than taking a chance of this situation. Rookie tight ends Martrez Milner and Dwayne Blakley will split time at TE if Crumpler is unable to play.
08/07/07
Falcon TE Alge Crumpler will be out at least a week after being advised to
stop all football-related activity. The four-time Pro Bowler underwent
offseason arthroscopic knee surgery and has only done a limited amount of
work during training camp.
Huddle Up: Crumpler has "bust" written all over him this season. His knee problems
aren't a new occurrence; he's battled them for the last two seasons. And
there's serious, serious doubt that Michael Vick will see any action this
season. Think long and hard before you risk a pick on Crumpler as your No. 1
tight end.
09/29/06
Here's a surprise; Alge Crumpler is Atlanta's leading
receiver after three games. And he only has nine
catches.
Huddle Up: If the Falcon rushing attack isn't on track, Crumpler
owners will be the beneficiaries. Against New Orleans,
Michael Vick threw five of his first nine passes to
Crumpler and a total for the game of 12 throws out of
31.
08/25/06
The Falcons have been careful with their star tight end,
who is coming off off-season shoulder and knee
surgery. But Crumpler will play in Saturday's preseason
game against Tennessee and is expected to play a
half.
Huddle Up: Good news for Michael Vick's No. 1 target. If he gets
through Saturday's game without incident, he'll be good
to go Week 1.
