2007 Outlook

Davis was the hot rookie with freakish size and speed when he was drafted by the 49ers last year but thanks to a broken fibula in week three, Davis only played in nine games and ended with 265 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns. His 13.3 yards per catch was better than all but Alge Crumpler for tight ends with 20 catches of more. He had low numbers in most games but did turn in 74 yards on three catches against the Packers and had four receptions for 91 yards against the Cardinals during the final four weeks of the season. Davis has huge upside in this offense and a broken leg is not like a bad knee or shoulder – it’s a freak one-time thing. The new OC Jim Hostler has already said he is working on ways to expand Davis’ role in 2007 and while he may not be among the top tight ends taken in your fantasy draft, he could end up being one of the top scoring tight ends in your league. If you miss out on one of the top three, take a swing for the fence with Davis. In a position that begs for playmakers and mainly offers up run blockers, Davis should see a dramatic increase this year.

Recent Priority News

09/26/08
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis believes he will eventually catch more passes within the team's offense. Davis has just four catches for 68 yards so far this season. "I'm just out here working hard and getting ready for that chance I've got coming," Davis said Thursday, Sept. 25. "Just run, and the ball will be there. That's what my coach tells me."
Huddle Up: There was plenty of concern coming into this season that Davis might see reduced numbers because of Mike Martz's unfamiliarity with the tight end position. However, we've at least seen signs that Martz is attempting to work Davis into the offense; hopefully, we'll see more than just signs in the very near future to uptick VD from his current 21-catch, 363-yard pace.

07/22/08
The San Jose Mercury News reports San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis looked excellent during offseason minicamps. He ran more inventive routes than he did in previous offenses with the team. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz said he doesn't know anyone else in the league capable of running like Davis does at tight end. However, tight ends traditionally do not have big statistical seasons under Martz.
Huddle Up: If Davis can continue gaining the respect of Martz, then Martz may alter his thinking regarding the usage of tight ends in his offense. This could be the season Davis starts fulfilling the potential he flashed when he entered the league.

10/29/07
49ers tight end Vernon Davis turned in a nice performance Sunday against the rival New Orleans Saints despite losing the game 31-10. Davis was one of the few bright spots on the day for San Francisco as he hauled in 6 receptions for 71 yards and 1 touchdown. The touchdown catch came in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard strike by QB Alex Smith.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners looking for a tight end should look no further than San Francisco's Vernon Davis since he could be the focal point of the San Francisco passing attack for the rest of the season. Due to Davis' slow start due to injury he can be found on the waiver wires in alot of leagues.

09/24/07
Vernon Davis has suffered a sprained MCL in his knee that is expected to keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. Davis was injured in the third quarter of the Steelers game on Sunday on a hit by Troy Polamalu.
Huddle Up: Tough break for the 49ers who finally got Davis involved in the passing scheme last week. For a passing game already struggling to regain the form of 2006 when lesser receivers were used, this is another hit to the 49ers offense.

09/11/07
Davis, with just two receptions for four yards, is up there with Steven Jackson as the biggest Fantasy disappointment of Week 1.
Huddle Up: You've got to think he'll eventually click with Alex Smith, and Week 2 against the Rams would seem like a good time to do it. Stick with Davis as your No. 1 tight end.

12/11/06
Rookie TE Vernon Davis showed Sunday why the 49ers used a high draft pick to get him. The rookie TE from Maryland caught 3 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown for San Francisco Sunday. The highlight of the day came late in the fourth quarter when Davis caught a short pass from Alex Smith and scampered 52 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Huddle Up: Davis is a monster of a man at 6'3" 253 pounds and will be a dominate part of the 49ers offense in the coming years. He will have good matchups for the rest of 2006 with the 49ers playing against Seattle, Arizona and Denver to end the season. Acquire him in keeper leagues for next season if you can.
