2007 Outlook

While Tomlinson was busy setting records, all Gates did was to yet again lead all NFL tight ends with 924 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s easily the best tight end to draft since he has locked down the #1 spot for the last three seasons but his 2006 campaign was his lowest since becoming a starter in 2004. Gates numbers increased later in the season which is a favorable sign that he is getting in synch with Phillip Rivers and the Chargers should be able to get more from their wide receivers this year with Vincent Jackson, Eric Parker and the rookie Craig Davis. In his worst year, he is still the best tight end.

Recent Priority News

The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) ran about 20 routes of various types Saturday, Aug. 16. He came in and out of his breaks very well and walked off the field without a limp. 'I'll tell you what, it's starting to feel close to normal,' Gates said. 'It still gets sore, but the difference is I can go out and do some things.'
Huddle Up: It appears that the starting TE Gates for the Chargers is making nice progress in the offseason coming back from a toe injury that limited him for just about all of 2007. When healthy he is still an elite tight end worthy of drafting as a No. 1 fantasy tight end for any team. He has slipped some in drafts this season and could be had at a bargain in the middle rounds of most drafts.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) ran routes and caught passes Monday, Aug. 11, and appeared to be close to form. However, Gates said he still has pain in his left big toe but that the pain is 'tolerable.' 'It looks better than it feels,' Gates said. 'It's not as comfortable as it looks. I got through it. The pain is tolerable.' Gates is frustrated with his level of improvement at this point, even though doctors have said that setbacks are normal for his type of recovery. 'It's about the same as it was last week,' Gates said. 'My whole thing is I want to see progress, and I want to see it fast.' Gates hopes to progress to hitting pads next week and perhaps return to practice soon after that. Gates said he still believes he will play in the season opener.
Huddle Up: If Gates is able to return to practice late next week, that will be a good indicator of his being ready Week 1. As long as he stays on that timetable, you should have no fear of drafting him as a top tier tight end. It'll still be a roll of the dice because of the frustrating nature of toe injuries, however.

Dislocated Big Toe / Off-Season Surgery - Chargers' TE Antonio Gates continues to tell reporters that he will be ready for the start of the regular season, but according to several online reports there is a chance that Gates might not be cleared to play until after Week 1. Gates, who continues to recover from off-season toe surgery, has not been cleared to practice with teammates and as expected he was inactive for the team's preseason game this past weekend. Gates is reportedly running and making cuts during individual drills, but he still experiences discomfort in his toe and he often complains of soreness in his foot after workouts. Gates has indicated that he won't return until he is 100%, and his current status would suggest that he is far from being completely healthy. He has begun to do more in practice, but he appears to be at least a couple of weeks away from joining his teammates. Things could be better for Gates and since there is a chance he could miss the start of the regular season you may want to drop him a few spots on your cheat sheet.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) believes he will 'definitely be ready for the opener.' Gates' rehab is going better than anticipated. However, Gates said he won't come back to be back. 'This team is too talented and too dedicated to winning for me to come back and not be ready to contribute. I wouldn't shortchange this team. Being out there and playing is one thing, but contributing is another.' However, an ESPN News report has contradicted the Union-Tribune report, saying that, in fact, Gates may not be ready for the opener.
Huddle Up: The qualification of he "won't come back to be back" is a little confusing. And the contradiction of the newspaper report by ESPN News is downright alarming. Hopefully we'll get a lot better indication of where he is with his rehab by the first or second preseason game.

Dislocated Big Toe / Off-Season Surgery - Chargers' TE Antonio Gates missed the team's entire off-season conditioning program and he's still not running a full speed, however head coach Norv Turner has told reporters that Gates is progressing well and that he will be ready for the start of the regular season. Gates, who dislocated his left big toe late last season, had surgery to repair the damage to the ligaments and tendons in the surrounding area early in the off-season and according to reports he is about a month away from being cleared to return. Gates is no longer wearing a walking boot but he only recently was cleared to jog and he will likely be held out of training camp as a precaution. Gates is anxious to get back but he indicated to reporters that he is willing to wait as long as the team deems necessary before practicing and playing again. The Chargers are doing this the right way by playing it safe with their best receiver. Expect him to be healthy for Week 1, but we will keep a close eye on his progress just in case.

07/25/08
The San Diego Chargers have placed TE Antonio Gates (toe) on their active physically unable to perform list. He is eligible to return once he is able to pass a physical.
Huddle Up: Gates' troublesome toe is improving, and he has said in published reports he's running at "65 to 75" percent. All involved remain optimistic he'll be ready for the start of the season, and it hasn't prevented Gates from being among the first tight ends off fantasy draft boards.
