2007 Outlook
Martin comes over from the Packers where he has spent his first six years in the league and yet never gained more than 224 yards or 27 catches in a season. His acquisition would seem unremarkable except for two facts. First, the Dolphins allowed Randy McMichael to leave for St. Louis and right now Martin is the best tight end that they have. The only other with an NFL catch is Justin Peele who only had 16 catches for 116 yards and one score last year. Martin is the starting tight end and the closest thing to a true pass catcher they have in the position., Secondly, the new offense being installed by Cam Cameron is the same he has run in San Diego where a certain tight end has been fantasy manna from heaven.
Of course Martin is hardly 1:1 with Antonio Gates, but it is favorable that he was acquired by Cameron in the offseason and he will fill the position that was made famous in San Diego. Tight ends also will often have very good seasons in the first year of an offense as the team digests the change in scheme. It’s is very premature to consider Martin as worthy of being a fantasy starter, but his upside alone makes him an intriguing back-up tight end for your team. Any tight end with upside after the first dozen are drafted is indeed a tight end worth owning.
Recent Priority News
11/08/07
The Dolphins tight end David Martin has returned to practice after missing the London game with a strained groin. He is expected to play against the Bills this week.
Huddle Up: Martin has some fantasy potential down the stretch in a terrible Miami offense led by Cleo Lemon. Last season, Lemon often relied on his tight ends in his brief playing time and threw Martin two scores in week six. Even Justin Peele had six catches for 42 yards in the London game when he replaced Martin.
10/26/07
The Dolphins will likely be without tight end David Martin on Sunday when they play the New York Giants in London, England. Martin has been unable to practice this week because of a strained groin.
Huddle Up: No major loss but Cleo Lemon has shown to like throwing to his tight ends. With the absence of Chris Chambers now, Lemon will need to make use of both Marty Booker and Derek Hagan but will also need to use more targets like his tight end and running backs.
10/28/05
David Martin strained his right hamstring in practice on Thursday and may miss the game against the Bengals this week. He has been added to the injury report as questionable and was held out of practice on Friday.
Huddle Up: Just yet another receiving outlet removed from Favre's arsenal. Martin is the back-up for Bubba Franks but has seen more playing time this season with Franks missing time due to injury and the overall lack of adequate receivers for Favre to target. Martin had two catches for 30 yards last week as one of three tight ends with receptions for the Packers.
12/01/04
Martin's season ended on Tuesday when the Packers put him on the injured reserve list. He is suffering from a strained left knee that he hurt in week ten. Ben Steele will be the Packers' backup tight end behind Bubba Franks.
