2007 Outlook
When McMichael was released by the Dolphins for salary cap purposes, the Rams wasted no time in signing him to a three-year contract worth $9 million. It’s not enough to merely consider that McMichael has averaged over 600 yards per season, he was also snapped up by his ex-offensive coordinator Scott Linehan who now head coaches the Rams. McMichael is not a particularly great blocker, his forte is almost exclusively related to his ability to receive. The Rams only completed 27 passes for 333 yards and two scores among all tight ends in 2006. Expect that to increase this year – McMichael alone has never had those low of numbers.
Recent Priority News
07/02/08
SportsIllustrated.com reports St. Louis Rams TE Randy McMichael is likely to have an increased role under offensive coordinator Al Saunders. McMichael is coming off the worst season of his career (39 receptions, 424 yards). An NFC scout said McMichael has the ability to put up big numbers in the Rams offense. McMichael is very athletic and could create matchup problems.
Huddle Up: McMichael has long had the potential to be a solid pass-catching TE in the NFL but has been under utilized in recent years. With the addition of offensive coordinator Al Saunders to the Rams staff look for McMichael to become more involved in the offense. Saunders has developed two Pro-Bowl tight ends during his career in the NFL (Tony Gonzalez and Chris Cooley) and should implement a similar tight end friendly offense in St. Louis. McMichael could have the breakout season many fantasy owners have been seeking for some time now.
10/26/07
McMichael guaranteed a win over the Browns this week, and now has to put
up or shut up. Of the 17 passing touchdowns allowed by Cleveland, seven
have been scored by opposing tight ends. In the Browns' past two games,
tight ends David Martin of Miami and Ben Watson of New England have each
scored twice.
Huddle Up: Cleveland has been caught several times cheating a safety closer to the line
for run support. If that continues on Sunday, McMichael will have a
performance that will back up his words. He's definitely worth a start in
leagues that require a tight end in the lineup.
03/08/07
The St. Louis Rams have signed free agent tight end Randy McMichael who was released by the Dolphins earlier this week. McMichael has agreed to a three year deal believed to be around $3 million per season.
Huddle Up: McMichael rejoins Scott Linehan who was his offensive coordinator in 2005 in Miami. The Rams offense wants to use tight ends more and had drafted two last season but the addition of McMichael immediately upgrades the crew. McMichael caught a career high five touchdowns in his one previous season with Linehan.
03/05/07
The Miami Dolphins have released Randy McMichael in part to avoid paying a $3 million roster bonus. McMichael is already the all-time franchise leader for catches and yards by a tight end and the move was largely just economics.
Huddle Up: The signing of David Martin from Green Bay makes this move much easier to digest for the team.
11/14/05
Within the next two to three weeks, Miami Dolphins TE Randy McMichael could face a multiple game suspension from the NFL regarding an altercation with his wife earlier this year that resulted in a guilty plea to criminal trespass on September 8th.
Huddle Up: The guilty plea resulted in a violation of the NFL's player conduct policy and now fantasy owners with McMichael should make preparations for the possible in-season absence.
10/10/05
The Associated Press reports Miami Dolphins TE Randy McMichael has scored in four straight games, becoming the first Miami player to do so in a single season since Mark Clayton in 1988.
Huddle Up: McMichael has definitely raised his game this year and has shown a newfound performance consistency under new head coach Nick Saban and veteran QB Gus Frerotte.
