2007 Outlook

The Cardinals spent an early pick last year to nab the 6’8" Pope but for all the bluster about wanting to finally use the tight end position in Arizona, the results were "same old, same old". All combined the position only posted 431 yards and one score with Pope accounting for just 161 yards on 16 catches and never scoring. The change in offense this year could end up benefiting the tight ends more (how could it not?) but even an increase will not necessarily mean there will be any significant fantasy value here even for the starter. There are only so many passes thrown and with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin already there, whatever does trickle down will be minimal. One thing to watch for – new offenses often use tight ends more in the early stage and then decrease their use as the season progresses. If Pope should start out looking like he is breaking out, do not expect it to last.

AZCardinals.com reports Arizona Cardinals TE Leonard Pope (ankle) might not be ready for the start of training camp, according to general manager Rod Graves.
Huddle Up: Pope was having a nice little fantasy season (five touchdowns) before fracturing and dislocating his right ankle in Week 14. If you're targeting him as a sleeper heading into 2008, you'll want to make sure he's on the field running and cutting at some point during camp before committing a spot on your fantasy squad to him.

Pope is out for the season affter dislocating his ankle against the Seahawks.
Huddle Up: Pope has been surprisingly effective this season, with five touchdowns on only 23 receptions. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team will take a "position-by-committee" approach, with Troy Bienemann, Ben Patrick and possibly Tim Euhus filling in to replace Pope. It's safe to say you should avoid the Arizona tight end position the rest of the season.

The Arizona Cardinals lost TE Leonard Pope Sunday due to a dislocated ankle injury he suffered when tackling Seattle defensive back Marcus Trufant after an interception. Pope will be placed on the injured reserve list ending his 2007 season.
Huddle Up: Pope had done a nice job in Arizona's offense however he was just not a big part of the offensive scheme. Look for Pope to come back stronger in 2008 as he could be a sleeper candidate at TE for next season if the Cardinals incorporate some more plays utilizing the tight end position more often.
