2007 Outlook
The outlook for Scheffler is bright for 2007 despite the Broncos acquiring Daniel Graham and retaining Stephen Alexander. In 2006, the rookie Scheffler equaled Alexander with 18 catches on the season but Scheffler turned that into 286 yards and four scores – about twice what Alexander did with his receptions. The more critical factor here is that Scheffler had 12 catches for 219 yards and four scores in the final five games as the newly starting Jay Cutler began to successfully use his fellow rookie. In the final four games with Cutler, Scheffler had three efforts over 50 yards and scored all four of his touchdowns.
Scheffler was drafted for his ability to be a receiver more than a blocker and that started to come through late in the year with Cutler. While the passing game likely won’t feature Scheffler as the primary receiver, Cutler is still learning the game and should continue to rely on his 6’5" outlet on passing plays. Many tight ends break out in the second season and Scheffler should be in a nice spot to improve upon what was a nice end to 2007. He broke his foot mid-May but the prognosis should have him ready by training camp.
08-31-07 Update: Scheffler is back from his broken foot but Graham has already entrenched himself as the starting TE. Tony will still figure in but Graham is the primary now.
08-27-07 Update: Scheffler is back and looked good in the preseason game of week three when he caught two passes for 33 yards.
08-05-07 Update: Scheffler was placed on the PUP list for now while his broken foot heals. He's expected back soon but is losing out to Daniel Graham who has looked sharp in camp so far.
Recent Priority News
06/27/08
The Denver Post reports Denver Broncos TE Tony Scheffler (foot) said he is fully recovered from his foot injury and is ready to begin training camp July 25. He was seen walking around in flip-flops Thursday, June 26, after wearing a protective boot last month. 'It feels pretty good,' Scheffler said. 'It's back to normal, and I am doing everything with the rest of the team, looking forward to getting this behind me.'
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should take a chance on Scheffler as a potential No. 1 TE in fantasy leagues this year as he should get plenty of opportunities to catch the ball. In light of the injury problems that could limit WR Brandon Marshall early in the season, Cutler will need a dependable outlet to throw the ball to. Savvy fantasy owners should consider Scheffler the likely receipient of a heavier workload in Denver since Shanahan likes to utilize the tight end in his offense.

The Broncos caught a break when Tony Scheffler's foot injury was not another broken bone like last year. "We know there’s not another break in there," Mike Shanahan said. "You can see that on the X-rays. But there’s something in there that keeps him quite sore and hopefully with a couple weeks in the boot he’ll come back full speed."
Huddle Up: Scheffler is a trusted target for Jay Cutler and should be looking at a very good season if he can remain healthy. With so many new receivers on the team now, Scheffler could end up worthy of being a fantasy starter.
12/22/06
Bronco tight ends Tony Scheffler, Nate Jackson and
Stephen Alexander have combined for 187 yards and
two touchdowns in the last three weeks. Scheffler as
three of the team's five 20-plus yard receptions since
the Dec. 10 game.
Huddle Up: If you're looking for a viable tight end option this week in
leagues where the position is manditory, Scheffler is
definitely worth a look.
12/10/06
Rookie TE Tony Scheffler had the best game of his young career Sunday despite a 48-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Scheffler, from Western Michigan, caught 3 passes for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns in the third quarter to help lead the Broncos back.
Huddle Up: Scheffler has all the makings of the next big Broncos TE and was targeted quite often in the redzone by Jay Cutler. The rookie TE will have the most value in keeper leagues but could also be worth acquiring for the playoffs if you are looking for TE help on your fantasy roster. Denver plays against Arizona and Cincinnati the next two weeks.
