2007 Outlook
Watson had a nice third season when he caught 49 passes for 643 yards and three scores. A sprained knee forced him to miss the final two games of the regular season but he returned for the three postseason games to record 10 catches for 81 yards in total. He ranked 8th best in the NFL for tight end yardage. Watson is a solid contributor for the Patriots and only had three games where he failed to catch at least three passes but 2007 could see a downturn in his production at least a little. The Patriots have reloaded their receivers with Randy Moss, Daunte Stallworth and Wes Welker which has to eat into the action that Watson gets this season. He’ll make a decent fantasy back-up tight end but it’s optimistic to expect him to meet the numbers of 2006.
Recent Priority News
09/13/08
The Boston Globe is reporting that TE Ben Watson has been ruled out for Week 2 and will miss his second consecutive game.
Huddle Up: In the absence of Watson, New England will turn to TE David Thomas who should get plenty of opportunities with new quarterback Matt Cassel at the helm.
09/04/08
The Boston Globe reports New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson (knee) was not seen at the media-access portion of practice Thursday, Sept. 4.
Huddle Up: No big news here, but just want to remind owners to bench Watson this week and go with a better option, like someone who will be on the field!
03/28/08
New England TE Ben Watson had to undergo ankle surgery to repair cartilage damage and scar tissue. "It was defintiely an issue, but everyone has issues, stuff they fight through," Watson said. "It was a nagging thing. Right now, it feels good."
Huddle Up: There is some concern that Watson may be hampered by this injury when training camp begins in July however he appears likely to be back to full speed prior to the beginning of preseason games. Fantasy owners should look for Watson to be a solid TE option for 2008.
11/02/07
Watson, who sprained his ankle Oct. 14 against Dallas,
participated in limited form in practice on Thursday. He
seemed to have no problem going through jumping
drills.
Huddle Up: The fact he was able to participate in that drill gives
hope that he'll be able to give it a shot against the Colts.
If he isn't on the inactive list, he should see some
significant time. Watson's proven to be a reliable target
for Tom Brady, and will get some red zone
opportunities if he plays.
10/08/07
The New England Patriots have been all about the Brady-Moss combo so far this season except for Sunday when they had a new favorite target on offense. Starting TE Ben Watson showed off his talents as he hauled in 6 receptions for 107 yards and 2 scores to lead the Patriot receivers on the afternoon.
Huddle Up: Things have been relatively quiet for TE Ben Watson prior to Sunday but he has once again established himself as a valueable TE option for fantasy owners. Don't look for the talented Watson to get consistent numbers week in and week out but you can count on him being a top redzone target when the defense blankets Moss. Watson should get more looks against Dallas next week as the defense will have its hands full with Randy Moss once again.
11/20/06
TE Ben Watson was a key part of the Patriots success Sunday as they demolished the Packers at Lambeau field
35-0. Watson caught 5 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and has emerged over the last few weeks for the Patriots.
Huddle Up: Consider Watson a No. 1 starting TE at this point since he is not dropping the passes he was earlier in the season. He could be a solid factor for fantasy teams down the stretch as we go toward the playoffs.
