2007 Outlook

After exploding on the scene in 2004 with 980 yards and six scores, Witten has spent the last two years in almost identical fashion. In both seasons, he had almost exactly 65 catches for 755 yards but 2006 served up one disappointing shocker to fantasy owners – Witten only scored once. His yardage was still 6th best in the league and he was also 6th best in receptions as well. But one score? The introduction of Terrell Owens to the offense meant that there was another target in the endzone and Owens came at a much higher price tag.

Witten started 2006 out very slowly but he picked up the pace after the first month and typically turned in around 3 or 4 catches per game for about 50 yards. He just never scores anymore and as long as Owens is there, he’s not needed in that role. The new coaching staff in Dallas spins a bit of uncertainty on the offense but HC Wade Phillips comes from the Chargers with Antonio Gates. More importantly, OC Jason Garrett has also been involved with the use of tight ends in Miami and as a quarterback with Dallas. Expect Witten to maintain a decent yardage role as a viable third down target but his scores are certain to suffer with Owens there and Barber excelling at the short touchdown.

Recent Priority News

09/02/08
DallasCowboys.com reports Dallas Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett could be used alongside TE Jason Witten in Week 1. The team is trying to figure out a way to work around injuries at the wide receiver position.
Huddle Up: Witten owners shouldn't be worried, this has nothing to do with Witten and everything to do with the receiver situation. Witten's going to get his touches and will not leave his owners in the lurch.

The Dallas Morning News reports Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said TE Jason Witten may line up as the slot receiver during the team's Week 1 game because of the injuries to the Cowboys wide receivers. 'Witten can be a third receiver. Obviously, he's a force as a pass receiver. ... There's no reason you can't give it a [Indianapolis Colts] look where you've got Witten put in the slot like they did with [TE Dallas Clark],' Phillips said.
Huddle Up: Sounds good in theory, but that might be asking a bit much to try and introduce new plays to Witten this close to Week 1. Maybe it's not, who knows? Witten's a bright guy. Anyway, the bottom line is Witten and Felix Jones should get some extra looks in the slot, at least the first two or three weeks of the season.

12/10/07
Dallas TE Jason Witten caught 15 passes for 138 yards and 1 touchdown Sunday to lead all receivers in the NFL for Week 14. Witten did have 1 fumble which likely cost the Cowboys a touchdown but the veteran tight-end made amends by catching the winning score with 18 seconds remaining in the game. "I was excited to have the ball back after thinking I lost the game for us," said Witten.
Huddle Up: Witten set a franchise record for receptions in a game with 15 and has developed into an elite tight end for fantasy owners this season. Witten should be started each week for fantasy teams regardless of the matchup as he is a primary target for Romo and the Cowboys passing game.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the season-ending injury suffered by Dallas Cowboys OT Flozell Adams (knee) is having a significant impact on TE Jason Witten's role on offense. "If we pass it 25 times, usually I'm going out on 22 [pass] routes," Witten said of an offense with Adams playing. "Now, if we're trying 25 passes, it's 12 or 15. The team is keeping Witten in to help the weakened offensive line with pass protection. "It's totally different," Witten said. "Now you are protecting and helping block. It's another body on those guys. It's not always a double team. It's, 'Chip this guy, watch this guy and then get out [into a pattern].'"
Huddle Up: A tough hit to Witten owners who had expected top flight fantasy production out of the burgeoning young TE star this season. It appears to be a similiar dilemma to what Jeremy Shockey suffered last year when the Giants left tackle Luke Petitigout missed a significant amount of playing time due to a bad back, forcing Shockey to spend a lot more plays blocking and his receiving statistics suffered greatly as a result.

12/27/04
Witten injured his nose during Sunday's win over the Redskins. He needed stitches on the bridge of his nose and will have X-rays to see if it's broken, but the injury isn't considered serious enough to keep him out of next week's game.

The tough and versatile TE is proving to be a Parcells type of player. "He's one of my very most versatile players. He allows us to do a number of things," HC Parcells said Wednesday. "I'll take a six-pack of those." Witten is the type of player Parcells likes, especially at tight end. Dan Campbell remains the primary tight end starter, but Parcells expects Witten to "be a very significant contributor to our team, very significant" in his second season.
Huddle Up: Parcells has always preferred to make the tight end a big component of the passing game. Can you say late round sleeper? I thought so.
