2007 Outlook
This is the year that Branch either takes the final step up or ruins his chance to ever be a stud wideout in the NFL. After five seasons in the NFL, his best year came in 2005 when he had 78 catches for 998 yards and five scores for the Patriots. He was traded so late to the Seahawks in 2006 that he did not play in the first two games and it wasn’t until week six that he had more than three catches in a game. With 13 starts, Branch managed to turn in 53 catches for 725 yards and four scores.
Branch only had one game over 76 yards last year but he remained good for at least three or four catches per week (or more) and averaged 14.0 yards per catch when he played with Hasselbeck in the game. Now that he has a season in the offense, Branch moves over to the flanker spot vacated by Darrell Jackson – the first place that Hasselbeck has been targeting since joining forces with Jackson. With D.J. Hackett assuming the old split end spot, Branch is now a true #1 wideout for the first time in his career. He was Brady’s favorite target as well in New England but that scheme spreads the ball out far more than what Seattle will do. This is show time and Branch had the talent – now he has the opportunity.
Recent Priority News
02/29/08
Deion Branch is expected to miss all of training camp this year and be ready to play sometime during the 2008 regular season. He is recovering from a torn ACL and will most likely start the season on the PUP list meaning he could not play until week eight at the earliest if that happens.
Huddle Up: Certainly no reason to hold onto Branch in a keeper league if he may miss the first half of the season and even then returns from a knee injury rusty and out of synch with the offense.
01/16/08
Seahawks WR Deion Branch will undergo surgery on his left knee due to a torn ACL suffered in the Seahawks 42-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The surgery is expected to be done by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama in the next few days.
Huddle Up: The recovery for this type of surgery is typically nine months which could keep branch on the sidelines for the start of the 2008 NFL season. Fantasy owners should downgrade Branch in drafts since he is likely to start slow due to missing training camps and preseason games barring a quicker recovery.
01/10/08
Seattle WR Deion Branch returned to practice on Wednesday and is expected to be ready for the Seahawks playoff game against the Green Bay Packers this week. "I asked the guys before the game, just give me the opportunity to go out there one more time this season, and they did that," Branch said. "There (are) no ifs, ands or buts, I have to (play). Tell coach Holmgren not to worry about it, I'm playing."
Huddle Up: Branch gives Seattle another playmaker on the offensive side of the ball which should give the Packer secondary fits all day long. Despite missing several games this season due to injury, Branch is returning at the right time of the year to help Seattle in their march to return to the Super Bowl.
11/15/07
The Seattle Seahawks got some good news Wednesday as WR Deion Branch returned to a full practice after being out with a mid-foot injury for the past 4 games.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners will be glad to get Branch back on the field and he should be a force right out of the gate with Seattle's new air-it-out approach. Branch will be a solid No. 2 receiver for the remainder of the season unless he experiences a setback to his injury. Check on his status again Friday and if he practices fully consider him a good starting option for Week 11.
11/12/07
WR Deion Branch is also expected to miss the game Monday night against the 49ers due to a lingering foot injury. He was ruled out on Sunday night during Coach Holmgren's Weekly TV show.
Huddle Up: Seattle will use WR Nate Burleson again this week in place of the injured branch. Look for Bobby Engram and D.J. Hackett to get the bulk of the work in the passing game.
11/10/07
Deion Branch did not practice this week other than a very light involvement in practice on Friday and will likely be a game time decision for the Monday night match-up against the 49ers. He is listed as questionable but unless he has a full practice during the Saturday session that is closed to the media, there is virtually no chance that he will play this week.
Huddle Up: Best to consider him still out this week with a foot injury that has been very slow to heal. Bobby Engram would replace him again this week if Branch cannot play.
