2007 Outlook

Two seasons with the Giants and Burress remains one of the better fantasy wideouts in the league but mainly because of his touchdowns. He scored ten last year to tie for 3rd best in the league but his yardage fell from 1214 yards in 2005 to only 988 in 2006. His yards per catch remained almost the same but falling from 76 to only 63 catches last year was reflective of the passing problems of the Giants in 2006. Still, Burress scored in ten different games and typically had four or more catches every week. He only had two games over 100 yards last year and both came against the Eagles but he was at his best when facing NFC East opponents.

With the departure of Tiki Barber, the Giants will likely be motivated to throw the ball more and that should directly benefit Burress. The biggest problem that he has from becoming a leader in yardage is the decline of Amani Toomer and the lack of any other credible replacement so far. The drafting of Steve Smith this year may help, but Sinorice Moss last year was supposed to offer the same optimism. His role as a touchdown catcher maintains his value as a #1 WR in fantasy terms and a very strong one if he can be landed as a #2.

08-28-07 Update: Burress takes a small tumble in the rankings because he continues to suffer injuries and has not been able to practice or play. Burress has had ankle sprains and the flu and a bad back and now the back is flaring up again. He carries more risk this year.

Recent Priority News

06/19/08
The Associated Press reports New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress said he thinks his contract situation will be resolved before the team's training camp begins July 25. 'Honestly, I think my situation is going to be rectified before training camp,' Burress said. 'I'm not going to worry about it, but I did state that I was unhappy with my current situation with my contract. It'll be worked out.'
Huddle Up: It is in the best interest of Burress and the Giants to get this contract situation resolved prior to the start of the regular season. With so many other distractions going on for the Giants, (Michael Strahan's retirement, Ahmad Bradshaw's legal problems and Jeremey Shockey wanting out of N.Y. among others) look for New York to come to an agreement with Burress soon since he is the No. 1 receiver on the roster. The Giant passing game would be virtually grounded without Plaxico and the New York brass should be aware of that better than anyone.

06/11/08
New York receiver Plaxico Burress was on the sidelines for the opening day of the Giants mandatory mini-camp on Wednesday. Burress reported to camp but would not partipate because he was unhappy with the progress of contract negotiations with the team. "Me and my agent are trying to get a deal done so I can stay a New York Giant for a long time," Burress said. "I, personally, don't like the way they're going and I am not happy about it. I am choosing not to participate." Burress has three years remaining on the six-year $25 million contract he currently has with the Giants.
Huddle Up: This is not good news for a Giants team that is coming off a big Super Bowl win over the previously undefeated New England Patriots. Fantasy owners should watch the developments with Burress' contract as he is a solid No. 1 fantasy receiver in a offense that hit its stride coming down the stretch last year. Burress is not the only distraction in New York as the team is also trying to work out a touchy situation with TE Jeremy Shockey as well.

12/27/07
Giants WR Plaxico Burress participated on a limited basis in practice Wednesday and is expected to be in the lineup Sunday against the New England Patriots. "I came in yesterday and told the coach I wanted to go out and get a few reps during the week," Burress said. "I'm starting to feel a little better. It had nothing to do with the game this week. I just want to get out and do what I can. We're approaching this game to go out and win."
Huddle Up: New York will need Burress to play if they are to contend with the Patriots who will be at full strength for their regular season finale. Since this game will be aired as a simulcast on the NFL Network, CBS and NBC in front of a large national audience, expect the Giants to pull out all the stops to win the game and prevent history this week. Burress should be considered a No. 2 receiver for fantasy owners in the playoffs this week.

11/28/07
WR Plaxico Burress is expected to miss practice on Wednesday with not only his ailing ankle but also an injury to his knee that he sustained against the Minnesota Vikings.
Huddle Up: The extent of the injury to Burress' knee is not currently known but this is certainly a concern for fantasy owners of Burress since the talented reciever already has an ankle injury that hampers him every week. Check back later in the week to see if Burress practices or further updates come out of the Giants camp.

11/10/07
As has been the story all season long, WR Plaxico Burress is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys with a lingering ankle injury. Burress has not practiced with the team this week to give the ankle time to recover prior to the Week 10 matchup. "After any time he works he might be sore, but I don't think it will be an issue," coach Tom Coughlin said.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should expect Burress to play this weekend since he has gone without practice most of the season and has still managed to be active for games. Burress should still be considered a strong No. 2 receiver for the contest against the Cowboys.

11/07/07
Plaxico Burress continues to be hampered by his badly sprained ankle that is not improving as the season progresses. He is being held out of practice still this week and the coaches are resigned to him just playing in games and watching film instead of practicing. "I think there are some fine details with regards to the timing of the quarterback and maybe finishing some routes," WR coach Mike Sullivan said. "There are some things that he is not quite where, I think, he wants to be and where we want him to be. And yet so far he is still making it pretty special for us. So it certainly would be even better if we could get him out there."
Huddle Up: Burress has been a warrior playing with the injury this year but hasn't scored in the last two weeks after totaling eight in the first six games. His yardage has also waned the last two weeks while the rushing game has flourished. With cold weather and windy conditions coming to New York the rest of the year, Burress is unlikely to turn in more big yardage games the rest of the way and his ankle will not improve in the cold either.
