2007 Outlook
On the plus side, Caldwell went to the Pats last year and doubled his career best marks in almost every category. He had 61 catches for 760 yards and four scores in what became the #1 wideout for the team. That evidently did not impress the Pats that much since they went out and acquired four more wide receivers in the off-season and possibly all four could end up better than Caldwell. With Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth likely locks to be the starters, Caldwell will slip back into a support role along with Wes Welker, Kelley Washington and Jabar Gaffney. All of the gains that Caldwell had made in his career are now likely over and his production should be so diluted this year that he carries little if any fantasy value.
Recent Priority News
08/14/08
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports St. Louis Rams WR Reche Caldwell has come on strong after a slow start to training camp.
Huddle Up: Caldwell has been a disappointment since entering the league, and he's running out of chances to establish himself. The Rams' Nos. 1 through 3 receivers are set in Torry Holt, Drew Bennett and Dane Looker, with Dante Hall in that discussion as well. So if Caldwell does make the team, he probably won't see enough opportunities to be any kind of fantasy football factor.
03/26/08
Veteran WR Reche Caldwell has agreed to play for the St. Louis Rams after signing a 1-year deal worth $645,000. Caldwell was a backup for the Washington Redskins in 2007 after coming over from the New England Patriots after the 2006 season.
Huddle Up: Caldwell has been brought in to compete for a starting job in the depleted St. Louis receiving corp. Fantasy owners should evaluate the Rams offense closely in the preseason to see how things are shaping up. If the offensive line can improve from last season then Marc Bulger and the Rams receivers could put up some consistent numbers in 2008.
09/12/07
The Washington Redskins signed veteran receiver Reche Caldwell to a one-year contract. Caldwell, who was the New England Patriots leading receiver last season, was released by the team prior to the start of the season. Caldwell had 61 receptions for 760 yards and 4 touchdowns with New England in 2006.
Huddle Up: Caldwell was signed to bolster the receiving corp for the Redskins and will likely compete for the slot receiver position with Brandon Lloyd initially. Depending on how well have grasps the offense he could at some point challenge Antwaan Randle El for the No. 2 receiver slot in Washington. His fantasy value is minimal at the present time.
09/03/07
Reche Caldwell has been released by the New England Patriots after being their leading wideout in 2006. Caldwell was made expendable by the additions of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, Wes Welker and Kelley Washington.
Huddle Up: Caldwell will find a new home soon but he'll never again be the #1 wideout for any team. His 2006 season was just an indicator of how bad the Patriots wideout crew had become, not a new direction in Caldwell's career.
09/03/07
The New England Patriots released Reche Caldwell, last seasons leading receiver on the team. Caldwell reeled in 61 passes for 760 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Patriots during the 2006 season.
Huddle Up: This move was not totally unexpected as the Patriots showed in the offseason that they were not happy with their receiving corp from last season. The Patriots elected to keep 5 receivers on their roster after cuts (Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, Wes Welker, Kelley Washington and Jabar Gaffney).
09/23/06
Reche Caldwell has been working hard to develop the trust of quarterback Tom Brady. Since coming over from the San Diego Chargers in the offseason, Caldwell has been the one steady wide receiver option that Brady has had at his disposal. Despite meager numbers opening the season (2 catches for 47 yards over the first two games), Caldwell seems poised for a breakout game. Although Caldwell only had two catches last Sunday, this led to three points for the Patriots. "We need to get more timing, continue to prepare getting ready for games," Caldwell said. "And I just (need to) continue to work on my route running. Just continue to get better every day."
Huddle Up: Someone is going to become Brady's top wide receiver target this year and Caldwell to this point seems to have the inside track. While TE Ben Watson will draw most of the attention in the passing game, this will only open the door for the emergence of Caldwell. Fantasy owners that are looking for a receiver to take a flier on should look to Caldwell if for no other reason than Tom Brady will be throwing him the ball. Acquire him if you have the roster space as receiver depth with upside because he will be a hot waiver wire commodity when he has that first big game.
