2007 Outlook

Carter only had 28 catches for 357 yards and three scores last year but the departure of Keyshawn Johnson has bumped him up the depth chart into being a starter this year – the guy who is not Steve Smith. He made the case for the promotion last year when he caught eight passes for 144 yards and a touchdown against the Giants in week 14. He also had 65 yards on four catches against the Ravens and did almost nothing more all year than the occasional one catch game. The 6’3" Carter has the size to out jump defensive backs and the speed to do something with the catch but he’s been in the league for three years and only has a total of 33 catches and just two starts.

Carter will also have to hold off rookie Dwayne Jarrett and that will be tough in the long term. Jarrett is a near clone of Keyshawn Johnson and was selected with the 2.13 pick by the Panthers. Expect Jarrett to get opportunity to show what he can do this year but for Carter and he to share playing time and passes. Unless Jarrett stumbles – and he has not looked that impressive in mini-camp – Carter is just a place holder and won’t carry nearly the fantasy value that being the #2 would seem to suggest. It may not be his job all season long.

WR Drew Carter of the Carolina Panthers stepped up Sunday to fill some big shoes for injured star Steve Smith who missed the contest against the Green Bay Packers with a shin injury. Carter promptly caught 5 passes for 132 yards and 1 touchdown despite the Panthers losing the game 31-17. "I thought our offense moved the ball well," coach Fox said. "We had more production today than we've had in quite some time. The turnovers I think were a factor, we had a fumble and two interceptions versus I don't think any turnovers the other way. And in a game like that, that's usually the difference."
Huddle Up: Carter was the lone bright spot for Carolina on this day as he caught his lone touchdown pass in the fourth quarter with the game already out of reach. Fantasy owners should look for other nice games out of Carter as he is a nice No. 3 receiving option at the present time with upside that could elevate him to a possible No. 2 receiver on fantasy teams by the seasons end.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Drew Carter had a big day in Carolina's 27-13 loss to the N.Y. Giants Sunday. Carter, the third year receiver from Ohio State, caught 8 passes for 144 yards and 1 touchdown with backup Chris Weinke at quarterback.
Huddle Up: Carter would make a nice complement to No. 1 receiver Steve Smith in the Carolina offense. Look for him to get numberous opportunities for the remainder of the year to see if he can develop into the 2nd receiver that Carolina is looking for. His value should increase especially if Jake Delhomme returns to the lineup.
