2007 Outlook
Chambers turned in a career best 1118 yards and scores in 2005 and by some accounts was slated to step even higher in 2006 with the addition of Daunte Culpepper. Instead Chambers took a big leap backwards, recording a career low 677 yards on 59 catches and only four scores. His 11.5 yards per catch also was a career low mark. The reality here is that his 2006 season wasn’t all that big of a drop when you factor in that he had a 238 yard game in 2005 that greatly increased his normal season totals. His typical year was only around 900 yards anyway. Chambers usually would turn in only moderate yardage in most games and have a couple of big efforts each year. In 2005, he had two big efforts and one was a true monster. In 2006, he only had one game over 100 yards.
The entire offense had struggles last year even without the numerous injuries that occurred. Chambers has been a solid yet unspectacular possession receiver for his entire career but this year could signal a change. The Fins are switching Chambers over to the split end position to give him better match-ups and hopefully create more space for him on routes. Converting from flanker – where most possession receivers play – could add a spike to Chambers numbers or it could result in little difference since he is not exceptionally fast – he just runs precise routes with sure hands and has never shied away from the middle.
The worst that Chambers should post in 2007 should be his standard fare but there is upside from the new position in a new offensive scheme. He will be the primary focus of the passing game as well. As a #3 fantasy wideout, Chambers would be a gem and even as your #2, he shouldn’t hurt your team and could end up a nice surprise.
08-30-07 Update: Chambers was reportedly shopped around for a trade which is not likely to happen but he drops a few spots because HC Cam Cameron appears intent on putting question marks onto the few offensive players that matter in Miami.
Recent Priority News
10/16/07
Fox Sports and ESPN are reporting the Dolphins have
traded Chambers to the San Diego Chargers for a
second round draft choice.
Huddle Up: The Chargers passing game and QB Rivers get a boost with the addition of Chambers. He is familiar with the system thanks to the Cam Cameron influences and with the team being on bye there is extra time for him to get up to speed. Chambers could break out in his new surroundings after escaping the winless Dolphins and San Diego WR Vincent Jackson could see his fantasy value take a hit. As for Miami, look for WR's Mary Booker and Ted Ginn Jr. to become bigger parts of the Dolphin passing game.
08/15/07
Miami Dolphins WR Chris Chambers is fighting DWI charges stemming from his July 14 arrest around Charlotte, N.C.
Chambers, the Dolphins #1 wideout, had a blood alcohol level of .06 which is below the legal limit of .08 in North Carolina.
Huddle Up: Chambers could still face a conviction on the charges despite the lower blood alcohol level. Fantasy owners should still consider drafting the receiver because he could be a nice option as a 2nd or 3rd receiver on fantasy teams even if he misses some time due to suspension.
07/14/07
Miami Dolphins starting WR Chris Chambers was charged by police for speeding and driving while impaired as he was traveling in the North Carolina area Saturday. "We recently learned about this and are in the process of gathering more information," Harvey Greene spokesman of the Dolphins said.
Huddle Up: This is not a good situation given the hard stance by the NFL on players involved in altercations with the law. Chambers could face a possible suspension and a fine relating to these charges by the league.
12/14/06
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers (leg) missed practice on Wednesday, December 13th. Coach Nick Saban is hopeful the wide receiver will resume his practice schedule today.
Huddle Up: Chambers is expected to start in week fifteen.
12/01/06
Miami WR Chris Chambers is growing more and more
frustrated with his role in the Dolphin offense. He's
gone 14 consecutive games without gaining 100 yards.
"I still think we've got a ways to go as fas as taking a
couple more shots down the field," Chambers said.
"Right now we're more of a receiver by committee.
We've got a chance for three or four guys to be over 50
catches. Everybody is just playing their role. I would like
to get going and get my rhythm together as well."
Huddle Up: Chambers is tied for second on the team, but he's only
caught 44 passes. His numbers don't look to get a lot
better against a tough Jacksonville defense.
10/01/04
Chambers has been ruled out of this Sunday's game with the Jets due to his knee injury. Derrius Thompson or Bryan Gilmore will start in his place.
