2007 Outlook
Clayton’s rookie season is fast becoming a distant memory. After exploding for 1193 yards and seven scores in 2004, the last two years have been injury marred efforts full of dropped passes and missed games. Clayton missed four match-ups last year thanks to a knee injury which landed him on injured reserve but there’s been nothing in the last two seasons that says Clayton will come back to form. In the last two seasons, he’s only had one game over 62 yards and most end up well below 40 yards. He also only scored once since 2004.
The Buccaneers have not given up on their former first-round pick yet but Maurice Stovall has made strides toward taking over the #2 role from Clayton. Consider Clayton as undraftable until there is concrete evidence that he has turned the corner on two horrific seasons.
Recent Priority News
07/30/08
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said WR Michael Clayton has been stepping up the last five or six days. 'He's put his fist down and said, 'I'm a go-to receiver.' If he continues to do that, he's going to be a big part of this offense again. Hopefully he stays healthy and continues doing exactly what he's doing. He's focused, he's all business and he's running all kinds of routes,' Gruden said.
Huddle Up: Clayton came into the league with a vengeance four years ago and set himself up as the up and coming go-to receiver in Tampa Bay. After that first season his numbers tailed off and became inconsistent. Look for a resurgence in Clayton's numbers this season as he appears to be more focused and ready to step up for the Buccaneers in a big way at the wideout position. Consider Clayton a worthy No. 4 receiver at the present time with the upside to be even better if he is given a bigger role this season.
10/23/07
Clayton suffered a high ankle sprain against Detroit
and could be out several weeks, the St. Petersburg
Times reports.
Huddle Up: Look for Ike Hilliard and Maurice Stovall to see more
looks in the Buccaneer passing game.
12/05/06
Starting Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton has been placed on the IR ending his 2006 NFL season. Clayton, a third year wideout, suffered a left knee injury in the Buccaneers loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday. The Buccaneeers signed Mark Jones to fill Clayton's roster spot with the team.
Huddle Up: Clayton has had another disappointing season in 2006 and has not produced consistent fantasy numbers since his rookie season. Ike Hilliard and Maurice Stovall will be elevated up the depth chart for the Buccaneers to replace Clayton in the starting lineup. Stovall, Tampa Bay's third round draft pick this year could be a sleeper down the stretch during the fantasy playoffs. He is a tall 6'4" wideout from Notre Dame that will make a great redzone target. He should be owned in all keeper leagues.
01/06/06
Starting WR Michael Clayton will be out for another week as the Bucs head into the playoffs. His turf toe injury continues to be an issue and there's no indication as to his return to the lineup.
Huddle Up: Ike Hilliard is expected to start for him again this week against the Redskins with #4 WR Edell Sheppard moving up the depth chart.
12/30/05
Michael Clayton will miss the season finale against the Saints with turf toe and is not expected to return to the playing field unless the Buccaneers go deeply into the playoffs.
Huddle Up: A fitting end for one of the biggest disappointments of 2005. Clayton was a star rookie last season but has been completely replaced by Joey Galloway in the passing scheme and has slogged through this season with a litany of nagging injuries.
12/27/05
Tampa Bay wide receiver Michael Clayton will likely
miss the regular season finale with a sprained toe, The
Tampa Tribune reports.
Huddle Up: Clayton looked like a great fantasy pick after last
season, but he could never get started in 2005
because of shoulder problems and assorted other
maladies. He could be worth a look in later rounds for
next season's draft, but not anything more.
