2007 Outlook

Re-uniting with Chad Pennington hasn’t provided the potential uptick in Coles’ production that was hoped for, even with Pennington remaining healthy for an entire season finally. Coles comes off his seventh NFL season with 91 catches for 1098 yards and six scores – a career best for receptions and tied for 5th best in the NFL last year. But Coles only averaged 12.1 yards per catch and played through two separate concussions last year and also suffered through calf and rib injuries during the year and yet never missed a game. He’s a gamer to be sure and plays much bigger than his 193 pound frame suggests he should.

Coles should be a decent value this season since his numbers from 2006 don’t speak to the fact that he was so often banged up and playing injured. He turned in five efforts over 100 yards and when healthy usually caught six or eight passes per game. Now that Pennington has a full season under his belt and Coles starts the year healthy once again, the addition of Thomas Jones should greatly help out the passing game by giving the defense something more to think about than Coles and Cotchery. He carries some risk from durability concerns but then again – he always plays. Figure on Coles having some upside this year and a good value where you can reach him in fantasy drafts.

Recent Priority News

03/31/08
Veteran WR Laveranues Coles agreed on a new contract extension that will give the receiver $11 million in guaranteed money for the remaining two years on his current contract with the team. Coles had been looking for a contract extension with the team however the Jets compromised and offered to guarantee the remaining money on his current contract to secure the services of Coles for the next two years.
Huddle Up: This is a great move for the Jets as Coles has been their most reliable receiver. Look for Laveranues Coles to recover fully from the injuries that hampered him last year and become a steady No. 1 receiver not only for the Jets but for fantasy football owners as well. Upgrade him on your draft lists for 2008.

12/23/07
The New York Jets have placed Laveranues Coles on injured reserve due to his severely sprained ankle.

12/06/07
Jets WR Laveranues Coles is expected to sit Sunday when the N.Y.Jets battle the Cleveland Browns due to an ankle injury that continues to hamper him. The veteran receiver was a gametime decision against Miami last week but played in a considerable amount of pain. Coles has been experiencing much more discomfort this week than leading up to the Week 13 game which will likely force him to the bench at least for the next game.
Huddle Up: Coles has battled most of the season through injuries and is a big part of the Jets disappointing 2007 campaign. Look for Coles to continue to struggle for the rest of the season and even at some point he may be shut down until next year because of his ailments. Fantasy owners should look for Brad Smith and Justin McCareins to get the starting nod for the Jets against the Browns in what could be a high scoring affair due to the weak play of both defenses this year.

11/22/07
Laveranues Coles has been made inactive for today's game against the Cowboys.
Huddle Up: Justin McCareins will replace him with Brad Smith helping out as well. The Jets will undoubtedly have plenty of reasons to throw today but the loss of their star receiver Coles makes it even harder for the underdog Jets.

11/02/07
Laveranues Coles has not practiced this week due to his concussion and remains very questionable to play on Sunday. This is the second concussion for Coles in the last ten months and will likely be treated more seriously.
Huddle Up: Major piece of the offense is gone without Coles. He has not been officially ruled out yet but be prepared for him to not play. Either Brad Smith or Justin McCareins will replace him in the starting lineup if he cannot play.

10/31/07
N.Y. Jets receiver Laveranues Coles was diagnosed with a concussion which he suffered in the Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills. Coles currently has a 104 game streak in which he has started going back to the 2001 season.
Huddle Up: It will take alot for Coles to miss the game against his former team the Washington Redskins but the league is cracking down teams that have players with concussions so not to jeopardize further injury. Fantasy owners should expect Coles to be a gametime decision this week but most likely to be out due to his concussion. The Jets would have Justin McCareins, Brad Smith and Jerricho Cotchery if Coles misses the contest.
