2007 Outlook
Ronald Curry is in the lead to assume the #2 role vacated by Randy Moss but whether he can even remain healthy for a season is a big risk. Curry has played with the Raiders for the last five years and never had more than four starts in any season and lost most of 2004 and 2005 due to Achilles injuries. Curry managed to make it through 2006 and played in every game at least a few plays. He led the receivers with 62 catches for 727 yards but only scored once. Curry was having a break-out season in 2004 when he scored six times and gained 679 before the year was ended early by injury.
Curry was due a $5 million roster bonus but to free up space he renegotiated the deal. Curry could be challenged by Mike Williams eventually, but he should start the season and could hold on for the year since Williams has yet to impress. Curry makes for an interesting upside player because he has the tools to make a difference and the offense will need to throw this year. But he’ll have to mesh with a new quarterback and a new offensive scheme – if not two quarterbacks by the end of the season. That could start out well with no game film on the offense and later tone down, but a healthy Curry early in the year could surprise.
Recent Priority News
08/15/08
The Bay Area News Group reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry is expected to start the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 15. Curry is competing for one of the team's starting wide receiver spots with WR Drew Carter.
Huddle Up: Curry takes an early lead in the oh-so-critical battle for who JaMarcus Russell will be throwing to when Javon Walker is covered and he's not handing off to Darren McFadden or being swarmed under behind an iffy offensive line. Curry has flashed talent in the past but warrants consideration only if your roster goes five or six receivers deep.
07/09/08
The Sacramento Bee reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry said he has hit the weights hard during the offseason and figures to play at around 200 pounds this season. Curry was at about 206 pounds and has been on a plan under strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll.
Huddle Up: Curry seems to be positioning himself well during the offseason to be a nice contributor to the Oakland offense which lost veteran receiver Jerry Porter. Fantasy owners should expect Curry to make a nice complement to Javon Walker and even possibly play a bigger role if Walker is slow returning from his offseason injuries outside a Las Vegas Club. Consider Curry a No. 3 receiver with some upside to produce if the Raiders can find some consistent play from their young quarterbacks in 2008.
06/27/08
ESPN.com, reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry (foot) is expected to be the team's No. 2 wide receiver and should be ready for training camp.
Huddle Up: Oakland has a lackluster group of receivers to go along with Curry which includes Javon Walker (who sustained serious injuries in Las Vegas last week) and Drew Carter. The Raiders are a team that could be looking to add another receiver at some point if things continue to look dicey heading into the season as many think could be the case. Fantasy owners should not rely on any Oakland receiver at this point to help their fantasy teams.
09/19/05
Curry re-tore his right Achilles' tendon and will miss the rest of the season. Curry spent the entire off-season working to recover from a torn Achilles' tendon that forced him to miss the final four games last season.
Huddle Up: Curry was expected to be a nice slot/possession receiver option to the downfield Moss/Porter show. So far that hasn't been the case this season, and now it will be up to either Doug Gabriel or Alvis Whitted to fill that role. Gabriel has yet to play this season due to a finger injury.
09/07/05
WR Ronald Curry (Achilles') is not listed on the injury report for Thursday's game against New England. Meanwhile, wideout Jerry Porter (hamstring) is listed as questionable.
Huddle Up: It appears that Curry, the Raiders' No. 3 receiver, could get the start opposite Randy Moss against the Patriots. Porter has maintained all along that he would be on the field for the opener, but his status remains up in the air following this latest report. In most weeks given these circumstances, Curry would merit consideration as a strong No. 3 fantasy wideout, but he saw limited action in the preseason and will most likely be a bit rusty. Not to mention, a matchup against the world champions in New England is hardly a setting for fantasy success.
12/06/04
In the midst of his best game as a pro, Curry suffered what is believed to be a torn Achilles tendon. He'll have an MRI exam on Monday to determine the exact nature of the injury. If it is a tear he will be lost for the remainder of the season.
