2007 Outlook
Edwards tore his ACL during his rookie season and there was guarded optimism that he would not miss much time in 2006 and that he could return without too many problems. Ends up modern medicine is a good thing. Edwards richly rewarded fantasy teams when he caught 61 passes for 884 yards and six touchdowns in 2006. That included three games over 100 yards and six different efforts with one touchdown. All things considered, the second-year player had a banner year.
Now entering his third season, he is in a nice spot for a break-out but that will be controlled by the fortunes of the team more than by him. The Browns have a fairly brutal schedule and did nothing to address the #2 spot other than cross their fingers that Joe Jurevicius can play 16 games for the first time in his nine year career and allow Dennis Northcutt to leave in free agency. No doubt that Edwards will be the primary target in the passing game, but he’ll also be the primary target of the defense. If Winslow has any problems stemming from his knee surgery, then Edwards won’t be seen this year due to all the different colored jerseys surrounding him on every play.
Also notable is that the Browns may go to the rookie Brady Quinn at some point which could actually be a good thing, but it all introduces more risk in expecting the nice breakout that Edwards seems so capable of having. Edwards has already gone on record as supporting Fry to remain the starter but that will likely end up short-sighted because Quinn will get his shot at some point and likely that comes during the season. Vastly talented with great potential, Edwards is rather unlike most of the other offensive players.
Recent Priority News
11/18/08
The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards had eight receptions for 104 yards in Week 11.
Huddle Up: Edwards didn't score and it was still one of his best games of the season, which tells you what kind of season he's had. Edwards has only three touchdowns and has cracked the 100-yard mark only twice. His performance against Buffalo could be a sign that he's finally breaking out of his funk and will play up to his potential the rest of the way. Or it could be an aberration. It's got to be extremely hard for Edwards' owners to trust him going forward.
10/14/08
Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards had five receptions for 154 yards with a touchdown Week 6.
Huddle Up: This one came out of nowhere, basically. Edwards had been one of the biggest busts of 2008 before that breakout game. Can he feed off of that performance and be a consistent Fantasy starter? You've got to stay with the hot hand for Week 7 at least, even if the Browns are playing at Washington.
09/29/08
The Medina County Gazette reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards (shoulder) played in Week 4.
Huddle Up: He got into the end zone, but do you really call three catches for 22 yards "playing?" Edwards is in the running for top fantasy bust this season. He and the rest of the Browns will get a bye week to try and figure out how to get their offense going.
09/25/08
The Medina County Gazette reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards (shoulder) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 25. He is expected to play in the team's Week 4 game.
Huddle Up: Edwards' performance will go a long way toward determining whether or not Derek Anderson keeps his starting job. There's a good chance the Cleveland passing game will get well against the Bengals.
09/19/08
The Medina County Gazette reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards (shoulder) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 19. He is listed as questionable for Week 3.
Huddle Up: With Donte Stallworth also iffy, the Browns may have to rely a lot more on Kellen Winslow, Jr. and Syndric Steptoe in the passing game. If Edwards can't go, the Browns will also probably utilize Jamal Lewis and the running game much more. And that won't be easy to do against Baltimore. You may want to avoid any Browns this week if you can.
09/15/08
The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards caught three passes for 32 yards Week 2, but he also dropped two passes.
Huddle Up: With at least two drops—more, according to some sources for the unofficial stat—in the Browns' Week 1 loss to the Cowboys, Edwards seems well on his way to defending his title as league drops leader. A lack of preseason work with Derek Anderson is partially to blame, and the weather conditions in Week 2 certainly didn't help. But so far this year Edwards has done little to justify his lofty preseason ranking and fantasy draft position.
