2007 Outlook
The speedy wideout turns 36 years old this year and yet he hasn’t shown a lot of signs that his skills have diminished. Though the Buccaneers struggled as a team in 2006, Galloway still had 62 catches for 1057 yards and seven scores – a very healthy 17.0 yard average per catch and this while the Buccaneers passing game fell apart otherwise. The addition of Jeff Garcia would likely help Galloway with more accurate passing but Garcia’s arm strength would come up short on the deep routes that Galloway has always excelled with. The Buccaneers have a very favorable passing schedule for 2007 and with no upgrades to a lethargic rushing attack, it is reasonable to expect the passing game to pick up this year regardless which quarterback takes the starting role.
Galloway only had four games over the 100 yard mark in 2007 but his season high came in week two with Chris Simms at quarterback. Potential upgrades in Jerramy Stevens and especially the improving Maurice Stovall could yield a passing attack that gives defenders more than just Galloway to consider (unlike last year). He’s too old to be doing as well as he has, but with no other wideout nearly as adept as Galloway, the old man still is running fast and should be the focus of the passing game.
Recent Priority News
08/01/08
PewterReport.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said WR Joey Galloway (groin) is expected to return to practice next week.
Huddle Up: Great news for the Buccaneers to get Galloway back on the field this early in training camp. Fantasy owners should consider a nice No. 3 receiver in fantasy leagues as he will definately get his share of catches in this offense. Also keep in mind that Tampa Bay could get behind alot this season and would likely need to throw more to catch up.
07/30/08
The Tampa Tribune reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Joey Galloway (groin strain) did not practice for a fourth consecutive day Tuesday, July 29. The Buccaneers believe Galloway, 36, will be back on the field within days. Head coach Jon Gruden said Galloway ran 20 100-yard dashes Monday, July 28, and looked pretty good.
Huddle Up: With Galloway currently nursing the groin strain look for Tampa Bay to continue to work Ike Hilliard, Paris Warren and Michael Clayton with the first team offense. Also, rookie second-round pick Dexter Jackson will factor into the mix in hopes of securing a starting job in training camp. If Tampa can find a young receiver to step up big this season to balance the offense then the Buccaneers could find themselves as a serious contender in the NFC South.
12/29/07
The Buccaneers have already elected to sit Joey Galloway for the season finale against the Panthers.
Huddle Up: The Buccaneers already have a banged up receiver crew not unlike many NFL teams and giving Galloway the week off will help in the playoffs since he is so central to the success of the passing game.
12/25/07
After hurting his shoulder against the 49ers, it's unlikely Galloway will see much time against the Panthers, if any.
Huddle Up: HC Jon Gruden doesn't want to take any chances with his star receiver, who is expected to be fine for the playoffs.
11/03/06
Tampa Bay WR Joey Galloway is licking his chops in
anticipation of New Orleans' expected use of
one-on-one coverage against him. Typically, teams use
zone against Galloway.
Huddle Up: Galloway caught four passes for 110 yards against
New Orleans last month, and in his past three against
the Saints he has 13 catches for 223 yards and four
TDs. Even with a rookie throwing to him, he's worth
starting.
03/08/05
Galloway, an unrestricted free agent, has reached an agreement to re-sign with the Bucs. Although he suffered through injuries during the first half of last season, he finished the season with some strong performances. Financial details were not immediately available, but the deal is for five years and it's believed the Bucs had only about $700,000 in available cap room.
